On a country level, non muneytary asset appearz to gain value.

On a planet level... maybe not so much...

Inflation is just a kapitalist weapon to make poor people poorer and rich people richer...

While I agree that inflation and quantitative easing (aka printing money) are a great way for governments to get to pay back their loans with money worth less than they took those loans out for, there are strong arguments that inflation of around 2% can be a healthy stimulus to the economy and encourage investment in means of production and spur on job production. Of course, I think the fundamental error in the field of economics is the emphasis on the measurement of consumption. Greater consumption is not always a sign that things are better. Excuse me now, my macrobiotic mung beans are ready for the fermentation stage...

As to the matter in hand, foreign exchange rates, I had an epiphany some years ago during another period of fluctuations.* Yes, those with non-Yen assets are better off this week than they were last week. No, you don't have a time machine to go back to last week and adjust your mix of assets to gain a windfall. Comparing rates today to what they were in the past will do no more than make you feel smug or depressed, because you can never go back to past rates, and they have no bearing on future rates. Wipe them from your mind immediately. And no, you really can't predict what will happen next week to rates either so you can either work yourself into a lather of sweat trying to guess and shifting assets around, or you can focus on the present and ignore the past and the future rates. It is all a game in which you are not the biggest player by any means. This material world is transitory, it is an illusion. I didn't come here for the Zen. I didn't stay here for the Yen. But the Yen taught me Zen. Now how are those mung beans getting on....

I was the yen would go down a bit faster. I've got some money in USD in Paypal and I'd like to bring it back at a profit.

Zero Hedge used to be a good site until it became the Kyle Bass Texas Prepper fan club.

The preppers would dearly love the world to descend into chaos so they whip out their guns, trade fake gold coins and live off Spam.

Japan controls its own currency, the government controls the central bank, and they can hit the off switch on the bond market if trading gets too crazy. Kyle may well join Steel Partners on the list of foreign investors who thought they could make the Japanese play by their rules.

Looks like today is the day we hit Y100 to the dollar. haven't seen that for a while! I love how JAL is now predicting loses due to the rise in the yen, and the extra cost of fuel. Were they passing on the savings just a few months ago when the yen was at 77 to the dollar. I think not.

Japan didn't take advantage of the strong yen when they could have... and now they will complain that shit went back the other way and life is still difficult.

Abenomics is going to fuck this cuntry. But hopefully I am wrong, because I love this place and do not want it to become the next Phillipines.

Don't be so pessimistic, the "Cool Japan Promotion Council" is considering nominating Okinawa and Kyoto as "Pop Culture Special Districts", complete with anime character mascots:

This got me thinking...is "cool" even "cool" anymore.
I can dig "cool" being groovy, but I wonder if Gen Ys think "cool" is "awesome" and use something hipper...A government organization in one of the most bureucratic cuntries on the planet using "cool" to describe one of its paper-pushing departments strikes me as being anything but "cool." But I associate "cool" with people like Steve McQueen and not playing dress-ups while wearing glasses and fucken cat ears while wanking to comic porn with pre-school infants who have 48-inch busts overhanging 4-inch waists.

That's funny...when I visualize Japan's debt problem, the image I get is somewhat closer to Munch's The Scream.

The government should do something to promote Okinawa better (and or make it more attractive) to both gaijin and Japanese. Is there a reason why Japanese people choose Saipan instead? Besides it's foreign.... Maybe it's cheaper...

Been gradually unwinding my Yen for the past few years into different currencies and funds, and guess I'm mega short in the long run. Still have a nice return on my JP funds though and wondering when the best time will be to sell these off.

With ZH, I always think some caution is required. I mean for the past three or four years they've been super skeptical on most trends - I stopped reading them cause you'd just lose money if you followed what they were writing about. Stumbled across this recently as well which kind of got me thinking that I'm not the only one about ZH.

hey Dreamy_Peach, long time hugh?

by far I would not listen to zero hedge about investments... just news for me. it is like the tabloids of finance.

I am a gold bug though and will dump as much as I can into it when I get paid.

In other news the spot price for silver is down to about the 23$ an oz. mark lowest its been for a long time. Gold is down too but still too high for my tastes.

I buy both its just the last time I bought gold it was around 900 something an oz. and probably won't consider buying again unless it get down around the 1200 mark. However silver is getting close to year 2000 levels so that silver bug is biting my wallet.

I try to explain to friends that the price of noble metals actually doesn't change at all. It the value of whichever currency your using that is either gaining or losing its value. Gold and Silver is the watermark that doesn't change.
