RIP Dolores O'Riordan singer for The Cranberries. This performance will live forever:

It is a tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.

- Macbeth (Act 5, Scene 5)

He made the Tokyo Weakender what it was...
Bill Hersey, Longtime Society Columnist for Tokyo Weekender, Dies at 87
tokyoweekender.com | 3018/March/14
...
The many different circles that Bill traveled in all featured in the society column that he started writing for Weekender more than 40 years ago, in which he would entertain readers with anecdotes drawn from life among Tokyo’s diplomats, business leaders, and celebrities. For many long time readers of the magazine, Bill’s column was one of the first places they would turn to when they picked up a new issue...more...

I just found out...Rob Pongi is still alive!!!!!!!

My friends and I on the west coast thought he had fallen down a hole as we had not heard from him in ages.
But he's A-OK.

What a relief. I was worried. I'll check in with him shortly and tell all the "friendlies" that you say hello.

Hope you are all well.

Damn, we have not heard from you in ages too.

His Wackitude Eminence, The Pongi, and I have been in touch and he's still crazy after all these years. Sadly, Pongi has fallen down a creative "hole" and has not made anything new for years (10?), meh.
On the other hand, there's been a huge backlash against Get-Wacky-in-Japan Videos, which was Pongi's schtick (so he dodged the bullet on that one).

As wacky as Rob's videos were, they were silly and a bit shallow at times, but never crossed into obnoxious territory or boorish foreign antics.
Also, he did his at night mostly, if I recall correctly and the denizens of Japan's nighttime streets are a lot more easygoing.

Double Dead Gaijin...

British chef, 30, is killed after being hit by two separate cars in a double hit-and-run accident while crossing a road in Japan
• Grant Andrew McEwan, 30, killed in hit-and-run car accident in Ina, Japan
• He was reportedly hit by two cars, both of which sped off from the scene
• Woman, 25 and a man, 54, arrested for 'causing death by negligent driving'

dailymail.co.uk | 3 October 2018
A 30-year-old British man has been killed in Japan, after he was hit by two separate cars in a double hit-and-run accident near Tokyo.
Grant Andrew McEwan was hit by a car crossing a road in Ina, Saitama Prefecture, after which a second car going in the opposite direction ran over him. Neither vehicle stopped.
Mr McEwan, reportedly a pastry chef living in Saitama City, was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was declared dead on arrival ...more...

Was during the typhoon...not hard to imagine why the drivers might not have seen him. Why they didn't stop, however, is another story. At least princess reported the possible abandoning of a body via collision.

And tho I don't like the trend away from gaijin dead in Japan to write about those not gaijin but from our countries dead, I have to mention RIP to John Singleton, black American movie director. I'm a fan of some of his movies like Boys in the Hood tho Higher Learning is politically correct dross well ahead of its time.

He died of a stroke, only 51. Fuck. He's gone while cunts live on. Oh and Freddie Mercury's dead - my students and other Japanese adults told me so. Interesting how they suddenly know Queen and its music and apparently now are all experts on 'gay'. Yet fail to recognise said gays in every walk of life in Japanese society including those little dickheads in boy bands. Trend chasing is fucking boring when you have to listen to it all the time from Japanese people.

Interesting how they know so much about 'diversity' too - I spose watching Naomi Osaka on tv qualifies them to be experts on that too.

A Best Korea reporter known for his physical fitness dies of a heart attack while out running.

Did Eric a pass two pretty asian ladies who offered to put scented lotion on his face? Did he brush past a drab looking asian guy carrying a Carmencita Pink flower umbrella?

Well-planned conspiracy?

Screwed Down Hairdo,

Are you really sure that he's dead and not just another one of his pranks?

I knew Mel since 1994, when gaijin were a rarity and we all used to hang out at this ex-pat bar in East Tokyo, ran by a plastic cockney called Steve Hanson, who was really Danish.

Still think this is one of his pranks.

Word up, Mal, aka Cloudy, is really dead. I got it from a good friend of his that he died in his sleep at his home in Ibaraki, near the sea where he could surf. He got married about a year ago and had really got into Christianity. He used to hang out in Roppongi with a bible. Because he died during this Covaid crises, he had a funeral but nobody could attend.

Before the FG Forum, many of the our membership were part of the Dead Fukuzawa Society. On academic forums like the DFS and NBR (japanforum.nbr.org/), Vogel was a real bigwig blowhard. He'll be missed.
