Any FG seen this? Dingo picked up the DVD for $6.99 at Best Buy in Salt Lake. It's a lurid, direct-to-video-quality turd starring Jennifer Jason Leigh and her breasts as a naive American girl lured to the bright fluorescent lights of Japan by promises of stardom, only to find, once she arrives, that her passport has been confiscated and that her dream of becoming a singer...has turned into a nightmare!
Dingo's banal observations:
-The movie was made in 1983, when Asians were still called "Orientals," and when it was still okay to make a movie depicting the Japanese, with the exception of one character, as Pure Evil, whether drunk and lecherous or sober and sadistic. And the movie implies that the one exception, a young yakuza flesh-trader, is more of a nice guy because he went to UCLA.
-Being "transferred to Osaka" is a euphemism for death! Whenever an uncooperative girl disappears, the nightclub owner says, oh, she was transferred to Osaka. Our star gets the message good and quick!
-There isn't one identifiable Japanese chick in the movie. Even homely Asian chix like Lucy Liu get the full-on vixen treatment in Asian-chick-fetishizing Hollywood these days, but back in 1983 dingo figures they were still regarded as mail-order brides or MASH characters or something, hence their complete absence from this movie. Does that shitty Michael Keaton movie made at about the same time have any cute Asian chix?
