Cool Sites, Useful Tools

Postby FG Lurker » Wed Jan 19, 2005 12:24 am

Not specifically Japan-related, but we all get to FG via the 'net. What are some of your favorite sites and/or online tools?

A few of mine to get things started:

tinyurl.com: A great site that "shrinks" long urls into very short links. Free of course!

Bug Me Not: This is basically a protest site against sites that require free registration before you can view content. The New York Times is perhaps the most famous example. Enter the url of the site you want to visit and BugMeNot will provide login details.

Jim Breen's WWWJDIC: A great online dictionary / Kanji lookup page.

Mapion: Japanese language site, but definitely the best urban-area maps I've found on the net. Great lookup system, variable map sizes.

Mapion tip (url split for easy viewing):

http://www.mapion.co.jp/c/f?grp=all&uc=1&
scl=25000&el=135%2F31%2F43.200&pnf=1&
size=500%2C500&nl=34%2F41%2F01.781

The two bolded "500"s can be edited to give you different map sizes! Anything up to 1500 is possible. 1500 gives quite a large map, too big for most screens. It's great when you want to see more than the standard 500 size gives, but scrolling is a PITA.

Okay everyone, share away! What sites help you in your daily travels across the wires...?
