ive looked in the local library at the dvd rental selection... as i expected, its kind of crap! Anyone know of a decent place where they rent DVDs preferably in the shinjuku/shibuya/harajuku area?

dont have to be english language or english subtitles. Probably should practise japanese anyway... ?!

Tsutaya!! Well, that would be the suggestion in Osaka anyway, and I think they are nationwide.

All US film DVDs will have both English and Japanese audio tracks as well as subtitles in both languages.

You'll need your gaijin card to sign up, and you'll be limited to 3 movies on your first rental.

Enjoy!

As an addition to the above:

DVDs will have both English and Japanese audio tracks...

BUT be careful if you rent video tapes. Some of those suckers are dubbed into Japanese! Typically this is marked on the spine of the box. If you're not sure ask the staff. Most of the time a given title with have both dubbed and subtitled versions available for rent.

Sorry...thought I'd replied to this when you asked before.
Tsutaya is a good option. Shinjuku has a branch in Shin-Okubo (turn right out of the station and walk for about 10 minutes). There is another near Shinjuku station east exit opposite Kinokuniya, on the same side of Shinjuku Dori as Mitsukoshi. They have a number of large branches around town including one right on Shibuya crossing. I don't think you can use your card for one store in another store, though. The could have sworn they have a branch opposite Mizuho Bank on Omotesando crossing but I can't see it in their list of Tokyo outlets (Japanese)

They have just recently changed this. Now one card can be used at any shop in Japan. Always wondered why they didn't do this before! Much better now that they have.

Is there a NetFlicks (DVDs by mail, no late fee) kind of operation in Japan yet? If not, there should be!

Yes, there are two companies at the moment I think...but I can't recall the details off the top of my head!
