Any of you FG live in New York??

Postby AlbertSiegel » Sat Mar 05, 2005 1:52 pm

I will be in NY March 16-20 for a business trip (media convention). I would like to see if any fellow FG know of any good places to visit or eat at. I hear there is a Yoshinoya in the Big Apple.

yeah i do. scrap your planned yoshinoya visit (it's in times square) because ain't no japanese cooking in the back. izakayas are springing up like weeds here in the big apple, though, so if you wanna see what this city's conception of takoyaki is, hey, go nuts.

i can always get you into the japanese-architect (forget his name right now. drunk.) designed museum of modern art for free, if you like (i work there and can just add your name + party to the guest list for the day).

While living in NJ and working in NY, here are someplaces I loved:
The Steakhouse at Monkey Bar

(212) 838-2600 60 E 54th St

Lindy's (NY famouse Cheesecake)
(212) 626-7306

Address:

1525 Broadway
New York, NY 10036

Cross Street:
Betw 44th & 45th

Most of the deli's are pretty good. I loved the chocolate capiccino's as well...

Trump Tower on 5th ave
near Trump Tower, there is a Takashimaya building- if it is still there. I worked in that building. They have some interesting stores at Takashimaya....
Rockefeller Center
Empire State Building....I use to work on the 20th floor before my company moved to the Takashimaya building. Kind of cool to go to the top of the Empire building.
Macy's---they have an awesome gourmet food section in the basement...I miss that a lot

Hello and thank you everyone for the great tips and offers! I am very thankful.

I am looking for anything fun to do or interesting place to visit.

Samurai_Jerk, I like just about anything. I am willing to give anything a try.

Where is the best Rays Pizza?

prolly, thank you so much for the offer. I would love to visit.

Mels, thanks for the great info. I will look into it.

Are there any good import shops for Japanese video games? I am looking for a used 10000, 15000 or 18000 model PS2.

Is there any place I can get a good Japanese style curry dish?

Ray's Rizza is Ray's Pizza; it's a chain. I guess some shops are better than others, but any will do.

If you want to try a real NY Jewish deli try one of these:

http://www.katzdeli.com/

http://www.2ndavedeli.com/

http://www.carnegiedeli.com/

For some Italian pastries try one of these:

http://www.venierospastry.com/

http://derobertiscaffe.com/

For the best bagels ever go to:

http://www.ess-a-bagel.com/

Just head to Chinatown for anything video game related. There are shops everywhere. Check around before buying and don't be afraid to bargain.

I grew up in NYC. 20+ years.

Samurai_Jerk has a lot of good recommendations, except Ray's Pizza. That's crap. Favorite Pizza is like favorite ramen- everyone has an opinion.

The best hamburger in NYC is at the Corner Bistro on 9th. Do a search on newyork.citysearch.com for the address.

Also check out chowhound.com for more details.

I second that opinion. I used to live a few blocks away and visited frequently. That's some good burgers.

I'm not recommending Ray's, but he asked about it specifically. I'm not a big fan either, but for someone who didn't grow up with NY pizza Ray's will probably do. Unfortunately the best pizza place in the City closed down years ago. It was a couple of doors down from Katz's Deli, filthy, and run by an ancient Italian guy everyone called pop. Man I missed that place. Besides the amazing pizza they used to make Italian ices in a large soda cup for a dollar and change. If you walked a few blocks to Little Italy they'd come in a tiny little paper cone for three or four times the price.

We can't forget these important NY institutions. If you want cheap local fastfood stop by a Gray's Papaya or a Papaya King.

Cool. Then I can ask you about this awesome pancake place I use to go to in NY. I forgot the name and don't know if they are still open.

For the life of me, I can't even remember the street it was on, but they made pancakes the size of a regular dinner plate and server you three at a time or they would make mini pancakes and stack them high. Just a fun place to have breakfast.

I heard the Russian Tea Room went downhill and closed two years or so ago. That as a fun place to go too.

Thanks
