Can you live on it? Yes with two provisos. Bar hopping is expensive in Osaka and if you do it on regular basis forget your budget. Secondly, try to eat like the Japanese do. Trying to eat European is is expensive and will blow holes in any budget.

Will you have any furnishings? If not, your initial outlay will make it difficult to save anything for travel.

Dimwit is wondering whether you'll need any furniture or electrical equipment (like a fan for the summer heat) for your accomodation. You won't want to bring that over so you'll want to know in advance what you might need. If everything is included already then you will probably just be looking at a mobile phone to buy.
You could get by without one but it will make life easier if it fits your budget.

I thought I heard something about how you had to show proof you would earn more than 250,000 yen/mo in order to get a work visa. I never really checked into it because I'd never go over there for such ridiculously low wages.

People from the States really miss out not being in that program. With the current political climate it doesn't seem likely to change anytime soon either.

For furnishing go the sayonara sales way. When gaijins leave Japan they sell sell their stuff very cheap, especially when they're in a hurry.

Yep! And the best place to find those sales is in the KFM.

Hehe, it's really starting to sound like I work for them, but I don't. The magazine is very simple and only B&W, it comes out on Thursday afternoons or Friday mornings and is free. You can get the PDFs off their site and use Acrobat to view and search them. Some very good deals to be had indeed, but of course some people want too much $$$ for their stuff.
