Headline --Gifu City-- 16 and 20 not possible

I hope this article sparks some serious controversy on what is and what is not possible in Japan. And -- how diet is connected to mental stability.

One word: Costco.

Massive (proper large size) pizzas for about 1600yen. Oven ready or pre-baked, whatever you want. Damn good too.

No kiddin'! Comes with a proper large Coke too!

The polish sausages with mustard, onions, and saurkraut are damn fine too... :P

^^But ^^

Postby zentogo » Thu May 12, 2005 9:50 am

Dude, there's no Costco close to me at all. And I have been here 3 years and never seen one. So I would say our good buddy BUD was in the same situation. In fact he wasn't looking to cook, he was looking to have a relaxing --no effort-- pizza. Just my opinion.

There are costcos everywhere but tokyo-to, you can find them in chiba and saitama. Any shop that requires space cant be built in tokyo and the yakuza probably have a thing for american shops.

but even large japanese shops dont have outlets in tokyo, like a good sized co-op.

I can't help your choice of living location.

However now that there are Costcos in Tokyo/Yokohama/Osaka (and Fukuoka, Lord only knows why) I can see the next one being in Nagoya.

Who said anything about cooking? Walk into Costco, ask for a large pizza, pay 1600, walk out. Or buy a huge slice for 250yen. Free-refill soft drinks are 80yen. Hot-dogs (big) with a drink, 250yen. There is more too. If you have a freezer big enough at home and an oven, you can buy non-baked versions and freeze them. Pop em in the oven anytime you want a pizza.

You can even order online from The Flying Pig:

http://www.theflyingpig.com/tfp/shop.asp?SC=173&PR=364&LN=1

Get the pizza, cut it into quarters, freeze what you don't want to eat right away and bake the rest. 1659 for an 18"er. Not quite instant gratification...But still very good. A friend of mine with no car does this.

I don't know --kechi ?

Postby zentogo » Thu May 12, 2005 2:37 pm

I know alot of people who say Nagoyites are very tight with their money.
Maybe they just can't buy and bulk and feel good about it. Maybe they
are always looking for the best price everyday --but only getting the exact amount they need?

Or maybe they spent all their time and money on the expo. Which includes adding a much needed Ferris Wheel to the side of a building
in the middle of the city. And so they can't afford to lure Costco in.
Or maybe Costco doesn't want to be in a city that spends so much money on a Ferris Wheel on building far away from the expo?

Nagoya would be the next logical place for them to open now that they have one in Kansai. Dug around (briefly) on Google Japan and didn't find any rumours about one though. :(

Costco is happy to take the money of individuals but their target is really other businesses. Restaurants/bars/pubs/clubs/groups/etc.
