FedEx Kinkos?

Postby FG Lurker » Tue May 24, 2005 12:47 pm

In my lunch hour today I noticed that the Kinkos around the corner has changed all their signs. Now they say "FedEx Kinkos".

Looking at http://www.kinkos.co.jp and http://www.kinkos.com, it looks like it's international -- FedEx Kinkos everywhere. Did FedEx buy them recently? Or is it just a branding change from a long-ago purchase? I can't find anything on Google News about it.

FedEx bought Kinkos early last year.

FedEx was my client when I managed branding and design programs in my old company (mid to late 90's). Some of those concepts were rolled into these new stores. FedEx has had a long relatinship with Kinkos as they originally located FedEx dropboxes in their stores in the early 90's. FedEx wanted to be more accessible to the public and small businesses so they wanted to establish retail outlets. After several years of lookign at it, they decided leveraging the Kinkos relationship into a buyout was the easiest and most cost effective way for them to establish the retail presence. This gave them an instant network of locations as well as a knowledge base of facility management. Also, and perhaps most importantly, they are extremely complimetary services. In at least the US, UPS is now behind as they have only a small number of retail outlets and no brand recognition for document/package preparation.

Probably too much info, but I had been thinking about it too lately.

Kinkos

Postby Mini_B » Fri May 27, 2005 6:35 pm

Kinkos employees are complete idiots. They have no idea about Fed Ex policies. I went into one in Shinjuku the other day and all the staff was stumped when I brought a package in that I'd created an airway bill for online. Apparently they've never seen that before and I had to spend about 10 minutes explaining to them that it was OK to use this type of airway bill. Plus, leaving your package at Kinkos often means that your package will go out the next business day as opposed to scheduling a pick up or dropping off at the real deal Fed Ex. I switched to UPS recently anyway. I like brown.
