Hiratsuka in Kanagawa has THE best Tanabata.

Our own gomichild has a great review and photos from last year on her blog

If you see an odd looking group of foreign chicks in Yukata - that will be us. Say hi.

Hiratsuka City Home page (Japanese) has all the details on dates etc. It is about an hour from Tokyo and well worth the trek.

If you want to really experience Tanabata, you've got to find some god-forsaken lonely little fishing village in the middle of nowhere, someplace too poor to even afford an omikoshi. Some place like this.

Since it is festival season and obon is approaching, most flights to and from Japan are pretty booked up, so good luck finding any cheap flights.

THe station is Hiratsuka. The walk to there from Odawara is over 20kms....you may not want to walk it.

Either go Shonen Shinjuku line to Hiratsuka (Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, Shibuya etc) or from Tokyo/Shinbashi/Shinagawa stations you can catch the Tokaido line.

If via Odakyu go to Fujisawa and transfer there to the Tokaido line to Hiratsuka.
