Civil Society in Japan

I am currently taking a class at the University of Washington about civil society in Japan and I am wanting to gage how the fucked gaijin feel about this topic? Also, if anyone has any interesting groups to suggest for a research paper that would be great.

The only information I really have on this topic coming into this class is Alex Kerr's, "Dogs and Demons." Which I am sure is a great resource, but seems to have a singular agenda.

Define "civil society".
If you mean "voluntary civic and social organizations or institutions which form the basis of a functioning society as opposed to the force backed structures of a state", I could play the Devil's-Advocate and say Japan is the fine example of disfunctional uncivil society in terms of its litered and trashed toxic beaches.

You need to define your "scope" for the so-called civil society in Japan you want to study.

Alex Kerr - the big whiner - who doesn't even live in Japan anymore. Remember this if you use his work in your class.. he does have a slanted view of the world so the sources he uses are not comprehensive and are just there to serve his agenda as you have already discovered.
