Too bad Nintendo DS does not have a browser since it has/will have zillions free Wi-Fi hot-spots at McDonald's, etc.

From what I can figure out, the PSP does not look for free WiFi hot spots but tries to direct the PSP user to fee-only WiFi networks. Please, pleeeease tell me I'm wrong, and that the PSP will hunt down open (free) WiFi networks just like a WiFi-enabled notebook computer.

If an open WiFi connection is available, can you just snatch a connection and start surfing with your PSP?

In urban Japan, just about everywhere has open WiFi connection is available thanks to YahoBB's default setting for unencrypted WiFi routers. Right now I've got three open WiFi connection available and around the train stations I use there are always a few open WiFi nets.

SONY CREATING FREE WIFI HOTSPOTS FOR PSP

THIS SITE says you can connect to the free networks, but they are very vague about their method.

I don't know exactly because I don't own a PSP.

since i bought a wireless router, I don't need to worry about it. I usually do this in my room.

So, do you think the PSP does a good job connecting to open WiFi connections? (Sony makes the worst-on-the-planet drivers and PC software. I dread fighting their total-crap software.)

What kind of WiFi range can you get?

I've learned where all the free WiFi connections are in my 'hood and I'm wondering how effective the PSP is a surfing the web from my favorite sidewalk cafe with WiFi.

Have you tried using your PSP's WiFi browser when you're outside your house yet?

The following link from BB sounds quite normal and sane for making a WiFi connect via a PSP. Does it really work?
BB's link wrote: ...to set it up, make sure the wi-fi switch on your PSP is flipped up, and then go to the Settings icon on your PSP's main screen. Scroll down to Network Settings, select Infrastructure Mode. Then, click on Connection 1>enter a connection name>WLAN Settings: Scan>click on the nearest open network>select your WLAN Security Setting (on an open network, select None)>Address Settings: Easy>Press The x Button To Save Changes.

Now, you're ready to go back to the main screen and launch your browser.

It struck me very similar to a PC laptop setting up its wireless card and the network setup interface is reasonably smooth...You can save previous "connections" (in case you have you moving about town and come back to one place, you don't have to sample the air for a connection, you can just say "use this one" that you've saved from the past...otherwise you scan the area and it picks out any signals and select which one you want to use and it does some handshaking with it and you're in. I've only fiddled with the browser a little bit, so I'm not ready to say it's great or it sucks, although I will say the interface of entering addresses is a bit cumbersome (although I suspect you could just load the bookmarks on the memory card) and the page navigation seems a bit ehhh...I suspect once you trick it out a bit, it probably works reasonably well, although it might take a little time and effort to get to that stage.

If you go the PSP route, Taro, which color are you going to get? I suspect the white one would show fingerprints less but would show grime more than the black one. And the new giga packs include a 1 gig memory card at a pretty good price ($50 more in the US) compared to buying a 1 gig duo memory card separately.

Thanks for the "giga pack" tip. I was figuring to buy an open-box special after Christmas (I have few sorry friends who work at BestBuy).
However, an after-Christmas, discounted, giga-pack PSP sounds like a better deal.

How's the WiFi range/reception with the PSP? The open WiFi spots tend to be 10-to-20 meters away and my Titanium PowerBook (the titanium sadly works as a Faraday Cage) has trouble picking them up.

Hey, I just read this on my own site: the PSP now has "chat" to go with WiFi. :o

PSP Voice Chat Confirmed
GamersDaily has posted a photo of the new PSP headset, which will see its first use in upcoming game SOCOM: Fireteam Bravo! I'm sure there are many looking forward to seeing these put to use in online play...
