Pryor died shortly before 8 a.m. of a heart attack after being taken to a hospital from his home in the San Fernando Valley, said his business manager, Karen Finch. He had been ill for years with multiple sclerosis, a degenerative disease of the nervous system.

Sad day indeed for those that loved his work. Not that he didn't dodge a few bullets though, and also not like he didn't live like a pimp at least for a while.

R.I.P. dude

To quote Robin Williams (re Pryor's autobiography):

"I laughed, I cried, I set myself on fire."
Mr Kobayashi: First, I experienced a sort of overpowering feeling whenever I was in the room with foreigners, not to mention a powerful body odor coming from them. I don't know whether it was a sweat from the heat or a cold sweat, but I remember I was sweating whenever they were around.

Ditto, for me, a homey! Peoria, he started out doing stand-up at the Blue Moon and several of the strip joints there, before he made the big time.

RIP

Jon Stewart said it best during the George Carlin tribute:

Comedians are a group with a few things in common. For one, we believe that somewhere right now, someone less funnier than us are making more money. For another, we think everyone who made it stole their acts from us. But we all truely love and respect 3 comics. Kinda the "Unholy 3" if you will: Lenny Bruce, Richard Prior and George Carlin.

While my top 3 all time doesn't include Lenny, Prior is always on the list. (My top 3 all-time are Prior, Steve Martin and Rodney Dangerfield.)

RIP Rich, heaven needs some fucking laughs!
Check out what I think you gaijins should be doing when you get to Japan at http://www.tokyoessentials.com ! Cum on, DO IT, I know you want to...

R.I.P. I've been listening to a lot of Pryor's old stand-up albums via Last.FM during the last few months. I can't say they all make me laugh out-loud (routines based on racial stereotypes have been rehashed ad nauseum through the 90's, long since they were considered 'edgy'), but his self-deprecating style (especially when riffing on his drug and health problems) is still refreshing.
There is nothing more noble than impassioned nonsense.

I pulled out some of my digital copies of his music, fired a spliff in tribute and tripped out to his genius.
