I leave for Japan in about 20 hours. I just went to the bank and grabbed $1000 in travelers' checks and 20k yen, cash. I have my ticket and my visa'd passport sitting right here and I am all packed except for what I am wearing. Oh, exciting times are ahead. I know Japan is home for y'all, but I am about to go somewhere pretty damned far from home.

It is probably going to take as much time from Narita to Saitama as it is in flight time from the US. Hope you have a good book.

Whenever I arrive back here the first place I head for is my fave ramen shop for Asahi and miso Ramen... mmm lunchtime... :lol:

Well, first we have to hang out in a hotel by Narita for a day so everyone can arrive, during that time I guess I will explore the area right around there and try to fight off my jetlag (possibly mutually exclusive, I am afraid). Then we go to Kawagoe by bus (which they said would only take three hours or so). For the next two days we have to go through boring orientation and only then can we go to our homestays and settle down.

Some of the world's smallest hotel rooms - but a great introduction to the unit bath - one of the most fascinating Japanese space saving inventions.

But they are not as small as some of the hotel rooms in Makuhari-messe. I just commute now when there is a conference.

Actually, I heard from a Korean Airlines flight attendant that they stay at a hotel in Shinjuku. So which airline puts their stewardesses in a craphole Narita hotel?

Well, I am in Kawagoe, but not with the homestay yet, for reasons unknown we have to stay in a hotel downtown for the next two days. I am at the TIU puter lab now, and the admin here tells me that connecting my laptop to the school network is 100% dame desu yo. Damn it.

Fuck him... excuse my French. ]verboten[/i], then their security plan sucks. If they keep their machines up-to-date, disallow unencrypted protocols, and place appropriate firewall rules on servers, then this shouldn't be a problem to put foreign machines on the network.

If we have a Meet Crispy party, we'll have to force him to come down to Tokyo. There's no way I'm making that hour-and-a-half trip to Kawagoe. And CS would have a horrible trip from Yokohama. Besides, Tokyo has more interesting stuff to do and would be central (but get ready to shell out the cash!).

And by the way Qantas puts up its trolley dollies in the Narita shoe box excuses for hotels. The tightarse airlines put them up in Shinjuku :lol:

Yo, I have had a bit more time to get my bearings. I am at TIU campus one now. Both campuses are near Kasumigaseki station, two away from Kawagoe Eki. This is certainly not the boonies like I thought, this is one big and crowded place. I am trying to figure out what things to do with my free time, and my current highest ambition is to somehow get to the Tokyo Game Show in Chiba on September 20. Anyone have any advice in that regard?

Well, I am slowly settling in here. Internet connection is spotty but might improve as my host family is getting DSL put in sometime. I bike to school, about 5km, when it rains I should take the bus and the train, but in reality it won:t eliminate that much time spent outside.

The house is about 3km away from Kawagoe-shi station and 5km away from Kasumigaseki (and the universiy is less than a kilometer away from that). On rainy days I will take the bus to kawagoeshi and train to kasumigaseki, it would probably take about the same amount of time.

Well, I found my way to Ikebukuro, I am at a netcafe here. I went to an arcade around here and, just because I am a Virtua Fighter 4 playing fool, got myself a VF.NET access card for 500 yen. Now I find out that in order to use its internet functions I would have to pay another 400 yen, but I don't know how. Does anyone else? Also, I am thinking of buying a Japanese PS2, but the lowest price I have found is 23,000 or so. Does anyone know if they go any cheaper? Does anyone sell used PS2s?
