Gaijin dismissals

Hi. I'm doing research for a masters course in Cross-Cultural Communication and I'm looking to receive input from gaijin that have been dismissed/fired/sacked (you get the picture) from Japanese companies. If you have been dismissed or know of any situations where other gaijin have, I'd much appreciate your input. I'm particularly interested in the communication (both explicit and implicit) used by the Japanese management to convey the message. A former co-worker of mine asked to be fired by our employer so that he could get unemployment benefits from the Japanese government while he set up his own company.

This happens all the time when staff resign they get a letter from the employer to say they were sacked. This is so they can get the unemployment benefits. But this is for Japanese citizens. I didn't think that foreign nationals were eligible for this - if you lose your job you lose your visa in theory. Please correct me if I am mistaken.

Nope, not true. This guy was a gaijin.

He probably would have been in the country a while, and if he worked for a large company it is very likely that he would have been enrolled in the national pension system and the unemployment system, so, yes he could have received the benefits. What kills me is that a colleague of mine was telling me about how he and and another teacher at a school we work at have been paying into the pension system, with the understaninding that they would get something when they retire, only to find out that they would have to work another 16 years, and only then would they get out what they paid in. So I'll keep putting my money into my money market account and wait for the fatefull day when I turn 65, because there is no way in hell I would trust the Japanese Gov't with my retirement money, it just won't exist when I get to retirement age.

Bingo. Is it also still true that when you leave Japan you get 80% of your top three pension paying years?
