Not only the Japanese...

Postby Tommybar » Fri Aug 25, 2006 12:13 pm

Saw on the news last week where some Japanese guy (unemployed) stole all the furniture from the next door neighbor. Then a week later, ran an extention cord from the neighbor's house to his. The neighbor returned home to see the extention cord and followed it to the guys house and found all his shit. The unemployed guy is now in jail waiting for a trial date...

Went out to my bar yesterday and found an extention cord running from the second floor apartment to an outside outlet I had for outdoor lighted signs and such. I asked my bartenders what the cord was for, and they had no idea. Well, I followed the cord up and fould that the FG on the second floor had been powering his A/C for the past 2 months with it. No fuckin' wonder my electric bill shot up 7,000 more for June and July...

FYI, I use 200v for cooling in my establishment, the guy upstairs was taking 100v...

Hey! Whatta deal! I think you would wanna thank that FG for volunteering to pay your June/July denkidai like that. I'm sure he will be just over-joyed to reach for his wallet, because it is so much easier to reach the wallet, when one does not have an air conditioner sticking out of one's ass!

Yeah, he's an idiot...I am good friends with his father so I will let the parents deal with it this time, mean while I have shut all the breakers off that lead to power outside the establishment...

Interesting enough, I could hear him laughing and joking with his girl right up until I pulled the plug, then it was 'Oh SHIT!' and they turned all the lights off and became very quiet...

In the US electricity theft like this is very common in older apartment buildings. In my teens I worked as a general handyman for a slumlord in Chicago. Maybe 1-in-10 of the tentants would try to make a hole in the plaster or drywall in an unused common wall between apartments such a closet and tap into the neighbor's power. I had one old lady tenant who paid for most of her neighbor's electrical bill for more than 10 years. The theft was only discovered when the neighbor started a fire by plugging an air-conditioner, washing machine, and dryer into the same 15amp circuit as the old lady's electric space heater. The only reason the thief was caught, was that the arson inspector investigating the slumlord (my granny) for a "suspicious" fire. The judge threw the book at the power thief who was one of "Chicago's Finest" --- a cop.

The Judge was right on. That is breaking some of the oldest traditions of the "Chicago's Finest". I mean what is the world to think, if you're only on the take for a thousand or two a year for juice. I am surprised he could even hold his head up in the station!

Plenty for the states. Just google "theft of neighbor's utilities" or the like. I don't know about J-land yet, but I have heard similar stories with people going to the police.

How cheeky... to steal electricity and then not have the pride to at least attempt to hide the chord... I am awe-struck.

Perhaps showing the evidence to the local Constable Plod could help repatriate the denki dorobo to his own country.

Mainichi: Man arrested for beating the heat with fan powered by neighbor's electricity
How do you survive Kyushu's hot summer nights when your electricity has been cut off? For one Nagasaki resident, the answer was simple: steal some juice from your neighbor. "I just borrowed some electricity to run a fan," Shigeru Yamauchi, 51, told police when he was arrested for trespassing. According to police, Yamauchi sneaked onto his neighbor's property Friday evening and hooked up an extension cord to an outside wall socket. His neighbor called police at around 6 a.m. the following morning, after spotting the cable.

Tommy, I'm interested in finding out what ever became of this?

I myself am guilty of doing this all over Tokyo. I use to plug my laptop in to any old outlet I could find since the only legal place I could get power was Mos Burger in Shibuya. Occasionally I would get a polite, you can't do that and I would politely oblige. However, stealing power from your neighbor, well it just isnt neighborly.
Spare a drink?
