Your new Kanji teacher

In Matsuyama, I have been noticing an unfortunate fashion as of late -juku teachers wearing lab coats. I assume it is a fashion statement, because I doubt any of these Jukus are conducting Chemistry experiments. Has anyone else noticed the same thing in your areas? Any clue as to why they are doing it?
