Why gaijins become like Japanese when you speak Japanese?

Postby Takechanpoo » Tue Feb 27, 2007 6:35 pm

As long as I know, most of gaijins unconsciosly behave like Japanese
when they speak Japanese.
When they speak Japanese they laugh hesitantly and fidgetly with their face cramping and blushed as if Japanese.

Probably gaijins in Fuckedgaijin.com too will become similarly.
BUHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Tell me why.

Yep, that's why the priests always waited until you were in the confessional. :p

being bi-lingual

Postby james » Tue Feb 27, 2007 10:19 pm

for the most part means being bi-cultural. speaking another language, particularly when fluent, is not just saying the equivalent words. all of the mannerisms, including body language and other subtle nuances are also included, at least when dealing with accomplished speakers. you're not just switching languages, but cultural modes.

language and culture are a package deal. languages evolve to suit the needs of their speakers and change to refelct the changes in the culture.

Another reason is to make yourself understood without the hassle of having to explain every word. Just speak slowly using simple vocabulary and that will get you to the love hotel quicker. Why bother giving English lessons when the objective to commingle?

Damned if you do and damned if you don't. So Takeidiot, you seem to want foreigners to use Japanese when we are in Japan, because that is the thing to do. But when we speak it well and begin to use some of the same Japanese mannerisms, we seem like we are silly and copying people. What is it man, what the hell do you want from people. I can't understand you at all, if you are a troll then have at it, but get the hell out of my face about this foreigners are crap etc. thing you've got going.

Don't worry about him Can, he should be quiet for a bit. The thread on circumcision would have just scared the living shit out of him.

Isn't this due to non-verbal communication that is cultural. If you adopt mannerisms when communicating in another language, isn't that just adding to the level of communication.... people read these signs as much as they listen to the words. Like crossing your hands in a "no" gesture, and excusing yourself with the open hand gesture and bowing as a curtesy. It helps to stop your message getting lost.

I know the poo-head was just trolling but I thought I would jump in with a serious reply.

It's kinda like how when you hang around MasaMania too long you start posting on forums as if you're a savy Japanese native.

Have you ever caught yourself being like the J-people, bowing into the telephone when talking to an important client, or the boss? I have and I sure ain't a Japanese. It grows on you and you don't always notice it.

Yep, all that sort of stuff is a big part of communication!

However, on the flip side, there are certain foreigners who out-japanese the japanese on that sort of stuff and are aslo more strict with their grammar and syntax and crap than japanese are themselves. I find this hilarious and it's why i laughed at Kume-san's infamous "gaijin ha nihongo ga katakoto no hou ga ii yo ne," comment back in the day on News Station. Debito protested this one big time of course. But Kume's point was a bit more humorous and a bit more nuanced than can be understood by folks like Debito.

I agree with you on this Slim, but it was probably best said at a party and/or bar among understanding people. At that time, Kume was the front line of the most popular and most watched program on Asahi TV and probably most other stations. He probably should have used more sense in that position as to how it would be received. But isn't that the way of Japanese, when they are talking about things. They use little reasoning on the impact of their comments to other people or on future things. They assume it is only being said to and for Japanese, therefore in that situation, anything said is all right.

BTW, did you know that he recently wrote a letter of apology to Debito for making that remark? It's on Debito's site.

This makes no sense at all. Take, if you really are Japanese, just post in Japanese so we can understand what the fuck you're talking about. Your English sucks.

I have to admit, that Take's "blenderised" English is not always exactly as clear as it could be... perhaps you should post in Japanese Take-kun

Good idea, but even better Take, is if you wish to continue posting in English for if no other reason, the practice, also post the same message in Japanese. Some members of the board don't have Japanese reading ability or their computers are not set up for Japanese, so English for them is better, but if you use J-go also, most other members can understand what you want to say without a lot of work such as as it takes now!

Maybe I have become delirious but this makes sense to me. All I think he's saying is that if you can take criticism then you're a decent sort. Only a loser foreigner would take offence so easily when he criticizes them.

There is always the possibility that Takechanpoo is actually joking although whether we stand to gain anything by making that assumption is debatable.
