Las Chicas in Tokyo Closed

This is of no interest to anyone outside Tokyo and probably already known to most residents anyway but I just noticed that the Las Chicas site says they have closed for up to a year. Apparently owing to a new development on the site. For anyone who doesn't know the place, Las Chicas has been a fairly popular foreign hangout for years.

Had dinner there once. Didn't really understand why it was so 'popular.' Much better food elsewhere, I thought. Similar to that place off of Omotesando-dori. I forget the name. Dark wood, popular with foreigners. Food is nothing to write home about.

There's a lot of construction going on in that area.

I'm more suprised with Good Honest Grub completely closing down, first in Ebisu then in Omotesando.

I didn't realize it had closed. I quite liked it although I somehow never seemed to remember to go there much.

I agree with Gen that Las Chicas wasn't exactly a gourmet destination but I think it was popular with foreigners because it had a decent location and lots of English. The outside patio and terraces could be quiet pleasant in decent weather and friends with children would often go there. It fitted into the same camp as places like the West Park Cafe, Aux Bacchanales, Fujimamas etc. Las Chicas was also used a lot as a party venue. If the last people you want to meet are foreigners then these are all obviously places to avoid but they fill a niche in the market.

I miss the brunches at GHG but for the owners it is a heap of work, no holidays and no time off. I understand he got a good offer for the space so time to do something different.

Regarding las Chicas, I did hear that the closing party was HUGE. It hasn't been the same since head chef Tony left.

Tokyo needs more outdoor eating venues..

Had a similar happen here just last month. Probably the most popular gaijin hangout in Matsuyama closed down, not for lack of business but for site redevelopment -hostess condos.

West Park Cafe and Aux Bacchanales serve good food. I was just never really impressed by Las Chicas or Fujimamas for their food. Las Chicas for atmosphere I can understand.

The service was always lousy at Las Chicas though gotta admit.

Aux Bacchanales closed due to new construction too right?

Definitely bad service there. The Harajuku Aux Bacchs closed but a new one opened shortly afterwards in Kioicho just along from the entrance to the New Otani shinkan. There's also the Ark Hills branch and a place in Ginza. The website says they are in Kyoto and Hakata too.

I remember Roys also used to be the popular brunch destination but not really since it moved to Roppongi Hills.

La Baka Canal is one of my favorate joints, cause it is centeralized to a lot of my office connections and we can meet there before going to the Roppongi strip for serious grazing.

However, the all new Nobu's has re-opened with Nobu and his pardner, some guy named De Niro, who I understand makes his living as an actor or something, were there to break open the sake keg. Some of you may have seen that on Dave's morning Fuji TV talk show. The Grand Opening was packed with talent and surprisingly, other that Specter, a camera crew from CNN and GB, not many FGs showed.

Its new location should really make it a much more attractive place for the elite to meet. It is right behind the Minamikan of the Okura Hotel in that new building on the corner. It is immediately opposite Shiroyama Hills and behind the old American Chamber of Commerce Building, which were immortalized forever in the annals of the history of Japan as the office buildings of Kamome and GB!
