Handicapped Daredevil

Postby Samurai_Jerk » Thu Apr 12, 2007 8:27 pm

So yesterday I'm walking back to Kawasaki Station from a client meeting and I see a guy in a wheelchair riding down the escalator. He has some use of his legs so it looks like he rolled onto the escalator and used his feet to brace himself so he wouldn't roll down. As he gets to the bottom he stand up and seems to be having some trouble keeping his balance and getting back into his chair.

I'm about to go help but I see one of those old guys in green uniforms that work as security guards in JR stations heading his way, so I start walking up the stairs. Then I hear the old guy chewing the handicapped guy out. I turn around and the guy has fallen over backwards in his chair in front of the escalator. The old guy, who probably weighs 50 KG, is trying to jerk the guy, who probably wieghs over 100 KG, upright by his arm. The whole time he's telling the guy off for doing something so dangerous.

So I go back down to help the guy up since the old fart obviously has no clue how to it and it just making matters worse. Some other bastard is riding down the escalator towards them and makes no effort to help. He steps over the guy and keep going till I asked him to help. All he does is turn the wheel chair around and walk off while I get behind the big mother fucker and have to lift him back into his wheelchair by myself with no help from the jerk off who walked away or the old guy who is still chewing the guy out and telling him how much he's incoveniencing the other okyakusama like me.

Now, I agree the guy was being stupid and probably needed a bit of a scolding. But get him back up on his chair and out of harm's way before giving him shit. And use some fucking sense. A 50 KG ojiisan is not going to lift a guy with limited use of his limbs that's a least twice his weight up by jerking violently on his arm. And even if he had lifted him he wouldn't have had anywhere to put him since the wheelchair was still turned over.

I was trying to see if I posted it on here or not but once I helped a guy who was having a seizure on a train in Japan. I used to work as a care-giver so I had seen it many times before and knew what to do. It wasn't like your situation where somebody was rude but it was like, at first, people wanted to pretend it wasn't happening. As a gaijin, it felt kind of weird to take the leadership role in a situation like that but I'm glad I did. I think I may have saved the guy's life. I was sitting on the floor of the train with my chu-hi and walkman blasting when it started.

I think people around the world are pretty much the same. No body seems to give a shit when someone is in trouble.
