Gunman killed after deadly rampage on U.S. campus

The numbers keep changing, but it looks like at least 30 people are dead. This beats Columbine for the worst US school shooting in history. I'm from Virginia and many of my classmates from my high school days used to go to Virginia Tech (a.k.a. Virginia Polytechnic Institute). Truly horrific.

ABC news is reporting that the number of dead is 33, including the gunman himself. I've heard rumors that the shooter was an Asian male in his 20's. Anyone find links corroborating this?

Interesting. I can find no US news sources that mention the race or age of the attacker. Wtf?

Given that gunman isn't running around, there's no point in releasing incomplete information which may or may not be correct when it comes to race and age, esp something as vague as "asian"....if they thought he was still running around, they would have said something about that, but since he isn't, most US media won't say anything until they have a name and then all bets are off...They'll be tracking down classmates from Kindergarden classes and ask "Even at five year old, could you tell that there was something wrong with him?". The other sources are probably feeding off a TV interview of a student there who claims that he saw the gunman and said that gunman was asian and was wearing a "cargo vest".

The US Broadcast TV media in my area (mid atlantic US) blocked out regular afternoon programming to "cover" the story, so they were falling over themselves to report something, anything to fill airtime...they are even quoting blogs and myspace entries as near facts. Of course, as the day progressed the TV background graphics and intro graphic packages got more professional...starting out as some variation of campus and shooting and then ending up as school and massacre....I imagine it will be something like Bloodbath in Virginia by tomorrow.

I'm now hearing that apparently he got kicked out by his (undoubtedly red steaming hot) girlfriend and lost it when he caught her sleeping with another guy. Too bad he was too chicken shit not to shoot himself, I imagine a lot of the friends and relatives of the 32 bright young people he murdered would be lining up to tear this nutcase to pieces.

The university canceled classes yesterday and today and set up counseling for the grief-stricken campus. Gov. Timothy M. Kaine (D), who had just arrived in Japan on a trade mission, immediately flew back to Virginia. He was expected to attend a vigil today.

From a Washington Post article citing the shooter as an Asian male who looked about 19 years old. At least they said "of Asian descent", and didn't accuse him of being a F'd Asian right away...
