Travel Insurance

Postby Big Booger » Wed Jul 09, 2008 5:59 pm

Any of you fucks have any advice on travel insurance for a couple of boners heading from Japan to the US to do some home repair.. I am looking for all inclusive shit here... at a decent price.

Most of the travel insurance schemes I have looked at limit any kind of driving accident or construction type accidents.. I am basically going home for a visit to do some home repair so I need some travel insurance that will cover that shit.

US is always the worst for travel insurance due to the stooopid medical system.

Do you have national health or a private scheme here in Japan - eg Global health.

Private health for expats always has a travel insurance option (usually included in the basic plan) and 30 day continual coverage for when you are back in your own country. There are also options for extreme sports - like skiing etc. This is what I have and it costs slightly more (about $20 a year) but worth it given how much I ski.

If you are on National Health, I don't have any suggestions other than talking to your travel agent as they are normally travel insurance agents for one company or another. Check the fine print.

You don't want to get screwed by medical in the US.

If you have a credit card, check whether you already have some form of travel insurance via that. I know mine (Visa) has it gratis, and the cover and terms and conditions aren't too bad, so I've relied on that for the past 5 years or so.

NB: You do have to make sure that you pay for the air ticket with the credit card, though, from memory.

Just a thought.

Check your regular local insurance, it may have terms that cover overseas medical care. Check carefully for the terms & conditions. I found my Blue Cross coverage was good in Japan, they claimed that almost all hospitals in Japan were authorized and fully covered for emergency & other urgent care. So when I had a minor medical problem and went to a hospital, they would not accept my insurance, it would be cash up front only. I would have to make a 250000Y deposit before they'd see me, but that Blue Cross would reimburse once I got home. Yeah right. Well 250000Y was about the rest of my travel budget. So I decided to just suffer rather than blowing all my cash and being forced to terminate my trip a month early.

Penicillin will normally knock that drip out pretty fast and it's cheap!

Gomi,
We are nationally health challenged... with no extra insurance. Although my wife does have Gibraltar supplemental insurance so she is checking her policy right now.

I'll check my VISA card but I don't think it has the travel insurance added to it.. but that's a damn fine idea.

Also I might get the wife to contact the travel agent about some health insurance as well..

Damn fine ideas gents and ladies.
