Being bilingual not only gets you the job, it also has a major role to play in your compensation. I would say as a rule of thumb that bilingual capability adds about 30% onto your monthly salary and sometimes as much as 100% (for certain highly technical positions).


Well.... the author of "What is being bilingual worth?", Terrie Lloyd, sold his start-up companies in Japan for millions of dollars and he ain't exactly bilingual. :P

Sad counter-example: Last week I had to turn down a Managing Director job for the Japanese branch of a US chip fab company because my Japanese reading and formal language (keigo) mega-sucks. :(
