ANA vs JAL-Domestically

i go with the blue team whenever possible for the following:
-member of star alliance
-morning flights from itami to narita
-can reserve flights in english via their website

jal, on the other hand, only has one morning flight into narita from osaka, is no longer partners with anyone for mileage, and their website doesn't even list fares.

to me seems kind of a no-brainer, but maybe someone can list reasons to change my mind?

ah, i didn't know that about JAL. they used to be partnered with emirates skywards, but then a year ago or so stopped. last time i had to fly JAL i asked them if i could do miles with any of my frequent flyer accounts and they said no, only their mileage bank thing.

not a fan of oneworld... i refuse to fly british scareways. other than cathay, i don't fly any of those really.

hmm, then you obviously haven't spent much time in asia. compared to singapore air, malaysia air, thai, cathay, etc, ANA and JAL are shite.

JAL will honor one world, but I don't think they've been included...

Personally I'd rather fly JAL international then Qantas... However, just switched to star alliance with Singapore airlines... Just a shame I can't use them more in Australia.

I've only flown ANA domestic in Japan from Tokyo to Wakkanai on two occasions. They were friendly, and business class was nice and comfortable.

JAL and ANA have no lessons to learn from anyone when it comes to good flight experience (service). The airlines you mention are fine but JAL and ANA are at least equally as fine. By the way, include China Eastern next time on your list of very fine airlines in Asia. It is also a really great airline.

the service is ok, but not stellar compared to what i experience on other asian airlines. flight experience is not just about service though. it's about the plane itself and how comfortable it is. about schedules, ease of check in, convenience, etc. i agree that on international routes JAL and ANA are ok (still not as good as the others, especially when it comes to the aircraft itself), but i am asking about domestic routes.

The domestic flights are so short it doesn't matter to me either way.

I have seen a difference between the JAL service and the Skymark type flights. I often use my JAL points to fly domestically and the JAL flights are much nicer than the budget airlines.

But I am a really boring traveller - I really don't need much attention or service. I see planes as just transport - like trains and busses. I don't need hot and cold running flight attendants, or special food or a flat bed. I just need to get to my destination quickly and quietly without any fuss or delays.

I feel sorry for flight attendants who have to deal with high maintenance passengers who are demanding of attention and luxury - it is just transport for goodness sakes - not a hostess bar.

If I want pampering, I go to a spa.

when you commute between japan and east africa every 4-6 weeks (and several trips up to europe a year to boot), it's impossible to see it as just transport.
but domestically, i agree completely...it's no different than the shinkansen for osaka-tokyo. i still stick to my reasons about preferring ANA domestically though.

i wasn't aware of any of the budget airlines for domestic japan travel. anyone got anything to say about them?

unfortunately I am an american....... All the US based airlines suck. Small ass seats, old entertainment systems (if any at all), $5 a drink for booze, angry disgruntled staff that look like hags.
I recently, not by choice, got stuck on a US airline. The plane was new but the interior was taken from an old plane....my tv didn't work and the seats had ashtrays! Wost flight ever.
Air canada has improved a lot lately tho. They just bought all new 777s with touch screen monitors and those diagonally placed first class pod like seats.

Sounds like you're describing Northworst. I have recently been liberated from their services by discovering United. Now don't get me wrong, I don't pretend to believe that United is a great airlines, but they have updated entertainment systems in coach and don't charge you $5 for a beer on flights to/from Asia. And I'm no longer forced to fly through Detroit on every flight I take to the US. What can I say? I'm easy.

Then your argument doesn't hold because Singapore and Cathay do not have any "domestic" operations. As for Malaysian, have you flown them lately? They used to be good domestically but not anymore. In fact they are out of domestic flights.

There is only one reason to avoid JAL: safety issues.
JAL has not lost any of its fleet to crashes and burns lately, but they are notorious with minor mechanical failures like the luggage cabin door opening up during mid-flight. They are like other airlines out there that are suffering from high fuel costs and they are cutting many corners, including safety, to survive the ordeal. I wouldn't take my chances with them.
