Being brave...

Postby gomichild » Fri Dec 20, 2002 3:02 am

Tonight I saw for the first time actual "hebi sake". So much for it being an urban legend...

What things have you been confronted with (usually at bonenkai's) and have put into your mouth?

Although I wussed out on the above I have eaten fish sperm and drunk sake with the baked tail of fugu in it.

Anyone?

Out on my farm . . .
Mamushi shu ---- A mamushi viper lives for weeks while it soaks in the sake or shochu. You just ladle out your drink while dodging the pissed-off poisonous snake...A real fun feat as the night's drinking wears on and everyone gets drunker. :eek2:

Actually, there's a "special" drinking place in southeast Shinjuku that only serves the weirdest or the weird of Japan's foods. Japanese bosses in Canon use it so much for hazing new employees they have had a billed account there of decades. Worst food I had there was raw dolphin fat "cured" in lees of tofu for a few months. :eeh: :!:

"Fermented Flipper Fat" Sounds delightful!! 8O

Putrid as well as completely anti-environmental!! Perfect combo. Actually could be marketed as recycling the by-products of the tuna industry.... 8O

Probably on the menu as something like

"breast of mermaid, bathed in soy milk" 8O 8O

No-one you see, is smarter than he,
And we know Flipper, lives in a world full of wonder,
Flying there-under, under the sea!

From the FG thread Kangaroo sashimi of Sun Mar 16, 2003 9:46 pm

For PURE PUTIDFCATION, nothing beats Japanese shiokara (raw fermented squid guts) but I rather partial to the dread kusaya, some sort of dried fish product whose aroma is so strong it lingers in your house for up to three months after it is fried.

And of course, there's the commonly found raw chicken sasami just to get your daily minimum requirement of samonenala.

Definitely not an urban legend. Though it might be rare in mainland Japan, you can find Habu Sake everywhere on Okinawa. It doesn't taste bad at all... or any worse than awamori or regular sake. But it will get you f*cked up pretty quickly.

If you'd like to order some habu sake you can do so at http://www.okinawamarket.com.

Mamushi Sake is common enough here on the mainland. Out Do-inaka at the Sake plants, I've seen it with the LIVE poisonous Mamushi viper still swimming in it. They just poured off a cup for me from the wide-mouth jar with cheese cloth to keep the snake in. 8)

That's pretty cool. :o I think I'm going to have to check that out sometime! What part does the snake actually play in the production of these kinds of sake? I've always wondered that......... Does the venom add something to the mix or what?

yeah, well,

I think I'll pass. No need to push one's luck, ya know what I'm saying.

I'm a brave lad, but thinking of drinking something that a snake has been sitting in and possibly SHAT in before it died just gives me the screaming heebie jeebies.

SNAKES! Why'd it have to be snakes!??!
