Dealing with jet lag

Postby Iraira » Sun May 03, 2009 12:03 pm

I know that I'm asking the criminally insane for advice, but how do you all deal with the jisaboke?

I just found this on Wikipedia...
A recent study in hamsters showed that sildenafil (known commercially as Viagra) aided in a 50% faster recovery from shifts comparable to eastward travel experienced by humans and was effective starting at low doses. However, this use has not been tested in humans and is considered an off-label use by the drug's manufacturers.

Truly a wonder drug.........

Since I get it for free, I use Halcion (triazolam) but other methods include:
Viagra reduces hamster 'jet lag'
NewScientist.com
21 May 2007 ... Hamsters that received small doses of sildenafil, sold under the name ... In other words, Viagra offers no jet lag protection for hamsters ... :p

Melatonin, a hormone sold in supplement form at health food stores, may help decrease jet lag. While in flight, consider taking some melatonin (generally 3 - 5 milligrams) at the time at which it would be appropriate to sleep at your destination. Then try taking melatonin several hours before bedtime for several days once you arrive at your destination.

The Wall Street Journal's health blog reports that drug company Cephalon are trying to get jet lag recognised as a 'circadian rhythm sleep disorder' in an attempt to promote their stay-up-forever drugs modafinil and armodafinil.
Modafinil, under the trade name Provigil, is currently a big seller for the company owing to the fact that it deletes the need for sleep and improves concentration typically without making the person feel particularly 'wired'.
It's licensed for the treatment of narcolepsy but is widely used by people without a prescription to stay awake and fend off mental tiredness.

Reuters: "Starving may fend off jet lag"
May 22, 2008 CHICAGO (Reuters) - Starving yourself before a long flight may help prevent jet lag, U.S. researchers said on Thursday.
Normally, the body's natural circadian clock in the brain dictates when to wake, eat and sleep, all in response to light. But it seems a second clock takes over when food is scarce, and manipulating this clock might help travelers adjust to new time zones, they said.
"A period of fasting with no food at all for about 16 hours is enough to engage this new clock," said Dr. Clifford Saper of Harvard Medical School, whose study appears in the journal Science.

Tried all those things...day after the flight I had a 37.8 degree fever that I initially mistook for a whack form of jet lag. Went back to normal after 24 hours with no other symptoms....hence no pig flu, although friend I hung out with in LA works in the infectious disease ward at Cedar's Sinai in LA, and we had some excellent Mex at Spanish Kitchen in Hollywood the same day after they got their first piggy flu case.
I couldn't catch SARS a few years ago, and I can't catch this new trendy flu. Must mean that I have ceased to be in MTV's target demographic. Now, I'm depressed.

When you land do not sleep. Instead hit the sauce and get completely shit-faced. Try to pull an all-nighter if you can. You'll sleep for an entire day once you finally pass out... and when you wake up you'll be good to go! I've done it a million times and it works like a charm.

Spot on. Liquor until you can't remember what time it is, or why you're conscious, and then wake up at the semi-appropriate time. You will have a Hell of a hangover, but you won't have any jetlag.

Does anyone know how one might get their hands on modafinil (Provigil) while in Japan?

I've noticed some of the Indian/Fiji online pharmacies offer both the real deal and generic versions, but I am wondering if trying to order them would guarantee a visit from the cops.
