Japan's smell......

Postby (1VB)freels » Sun May 08, 2011 12:36 am

I am drunk.... but that doesn't keep me from my one sense that doesn't go away. I am at home smelling the smells outside of my home. I smell all sorts of goodness. I didn't smell this kind of thing in the states. I only really smelled this here in Japan. May be a good thing. May be a bad thing. I don't know. I am drunk. Can you as a person that can stop and smell the roses, so to speak, tell me what you smell when you are in your most vulnerable drunken state. I put this as a testament to all of you here, just take a few moments to stop what you are doing and take a sec and "Smell the roses". Not literally. Just smell your environment. It may be one of those things. I only have about 2 more months here till I go back to the states for my last 4 years of military service. i want to take it all in as much as I can.... i think that if you are here in borrowed time, breathe it all in.... You will not have a chance to feel like this ever again.... Hope you all can see where I am coming from... I am going to miss Japan. I love you all and will miss it here. *tears forming now*

Since you're over in Negishi, have you tried walking through Shinrinkoen at night? Especially when the sky is clear?

Yeah, I noticed that too, but I only noticed it after I was drinking and ONLY in Japan!

No matter how drunk I am, the smell of rancid urine along what otherwise is a lovely street such as Oike dori somehow does not evoke the same feelings.

Although tears also almost come to my eyes, although in my case it's the fumes.
Never criticize anyone until you've walked several kilometres in their shoes.
Because

1. You're now several kilometres away; and

2. You've got their shoes.

How about that methane-y smell the day after rain? No Japanese seems to notice it, but I do. I think it might be the result of sewage treatment interacting with new water churned up through the movement of this water through the system...

Or am I the only one?

How about that awful sulfur smell that comes out of the drains in Tokyo during the summer? :puke:

I lived in the inaka, so I had none of that.

Appreciate the AN reference, but Japan these days reeks more of...ma-ke...

It's just the whiskey, cigarettes, and natto that give Japan its unique scent.
