J-drama!

Postby matsuki » Thu Jan 12, 2012 11:46 am

Sorry, this isn't about a TV show. A friend of mine just unloaded a bunch of family scandal and dirty laundry on me that I thought might be worth discussion/commenting on here. I figure we've all seen/heard similar stories.

I've known her for about 4 years now so I already had sort of a background on her parents. They live in Coligny's neck of the woods and the Mama basically hunted down "the most successful graduate from a Tokyo University" she could find, "ideally a doctor" but ended up settling for just someone with Tokyo Uni success. Papa went to a prestigious Tokyo Uni and would have preferred to stay living/working in Tokyo if not for family obligations. Mama somehow snagged Papa and went on to have several kids with him. Both have government jobs but the stereotypical old fashioned J-family hierarchy within the house. Papa is king, Mama is slave, no show of affection, no sex, and the only thing really driving them is to whip the children to be successful.

Despite her age, my friend still has many issues with her father and holds quite a grudge against him. She calls it mental abuse and accuses him of stealing her childhood but it basically amounts to the papa forcing insane robot style studying on her and less so on her younger siblings. No vacations, nothing fun, just studying and success at school/tests/etc. She said he obviously cared about them but the only way of showing it is his concern for them to be successful. :robot: Cold, controlling, infallible in his own eyes and quick to anger, she used to always mention how cold he is to her mother and how poorly he treats her. I remember she often said "Love is often not part of Japanese marriages." She often mentioned her mother talking to herself, alone in another room...saying her mother has "obvious mental problems" and fears that one day she may commit suicide. She basically looked down on her mother and felt sorry for her but at the same time thought she was too dumb to help herself just as she was stupid to marry someone because of their success rather than for love.

So...yesterday the mama basically bragged to my friend that she was going to marry a doctor. She could finally realize her dream since she was a teenager. Apparently all the talking to herself "mental illness" had actually been her talking to their family doctor...and apparently they had been having some sort of affair. (though my friend claims it can't possibly be sexual...LOL) Now that the doctor had recently divorced his wife, the mama and him have decided to get married. (though they are waiting until March to break the news because the mama's job is dependent on the papa's. Apparently for fear of violence against the mama, the doctor is going to be the one to break the news to the papa. The mama claims she's intent on taking the two youngest (preteen) children with her and changing their family names to her new lover's. (The youngest being a boy) She's also pushing my friend to accept an offer from the doctor to be introduced to some of his doctor friends for marriage.

My friend seems happy for her mother and thinks her father deserves what's coming to him. She thinks her younger siblings will be better off with the new doctor husband (citing only his wealth as to why  ) and actually seems to want to take on this doctor's last name and accept his offer to be introduced to some of his doctor friends for marriage. Although she was asked not to tell her siblings, she went ahead and did it anyway minus the youngest boy. Then she called me and asked what I thought about the situation...

:shake:

Anyone else see the potential here for dead bodies? Teenage girls keeping a secret for 3 months? I see this possibly ending in so many ways but none of them are good...:(
