Pros and cons of Japan

Con: men's shoe sizes in normal shops tend to top out at 27, I am 27.5 (or sometimes 28), 27 is too tight.
Pro: having found a pair which fit, it turned out most of the price was covered by store points.

Shops in Toyohashi have up to 29. Especially hardware store where you are expected to wear thick socks to work outside.

Problem is I don't pass through Toyohashi all that often. Admittedly the discount stores around here do carry 28 or 29s, but I am still a bit stuck if I need a pair of decent shoes in a hurry which don't consist mainly of resin-reinforced cardboard and fake leather.

My Hubbilicious is a 29 or a 30 too. He has not had any dramas with sports shoes from Nike etc and he has found some shoes even at ABC mart etc. You just have to keep your eyes out.

Shoes, pants...better off bought in the US. Usually better selection and there is no TIJ markup price to rape your wallet. Even better when there are oulets everywhere now

Thanks, that's where I usually go.

I was't actually asking where I can buy shoes, just pointing out it's hard finding decent shoes in a hurry without going out of my way (as I needed to the other day after discovering my one decent pair was no longer decent), but my frustration was tempered by the happy discovered of a boatload of points I'd forgotten about which offset most of the cost

Mind you, while we're on the subject: ladies, where do you find your outsize shoes in Japan? The Mrs. is 25, but 24.5 seems to be the cutoff point for lady's shoes.

I used to be a 24.5 until I had bubs and now I am a 25 or 25.5.

I try to get an invite to the Nine-West family sale. Failing that, the Nine-west shop.
Or Isetan - their sales are amazing.
Zara always has shoes that fit but not comfortable I have found.
For cheapies I can usually order from the co-op catalog or get the LL size in the cheapo stores. But there are "Angel sizes" in the shops under Shinjuku Station and also in most department stores.

Great... you too ! I always fight me Julie (23.5) against buying shoes from the interwab... Online purchase are supposed to be for things you already know to be good... (Russian Mail Order Bride for example)

But but but the Japaneeeeeeze have crazy amounts of sizing info. (and it's usually pretty accurate) Lots of it is useless filler but I think it's reliable. It's the one up they have on interweb sales compared to the west...I only know cause I hated making size charts for what I import all that measuring....

Size is one thing... trying them on and getting a feel for fit, quality, how they really look on your feet and not on the nice photo is another...

Trekking boots, motorcycle boots, everyday shoes - all size 30 or 30.5, all bought on the net from the U.S. for the last 7 or 8 years
No problems till now.

Which wabsite ? My Russian flight boots are seriously getting old (bought them in 94) and I really don't like the current style more trekking/rangers/army boots than flight (side zipper, really flat sole without much consideration for avoiding aquaplanning on wet flight decks... got few faceplant while crossing on the zebra crossings under the rain.)

Plenty of them, I ask the family in DC to send it to me when they receive it. If you can't do that, there is a private shipping service to Japan for sites which ship only in the states.
