Life insurance experience?

Postby chan » Thu Feb 21, 2013 3:28 pm

Does anyone here have any advice to give on life insurance for ex-pats in Japan? Either locally offered insurance or the ex-pat plans available here?

I've been getting confusing and conflicting advice recently (from IFAs) and would like to hear other experience.

Thanks in advance.

It depends on what passport you have. Aussies and Kiwis have the cheapest (cheap != bad) polices out there.

Japanese are a no go.

Brits and Euros get the mainstream stuff.

Yanks have difficulties...

Thanks IparryU. British. Why are Japanese a no-go, apart from the obvious reason that you can't take it with you when you leave?

I get mine through an agent in HK.

Life insurance policy premium is actually paid by my dormant super fund in Australia - it isn't going to be any use to me in retirement so I thought I might as well use it for something that I would rather not have to fork out cash for.

So I have a life insurance policy and a disability policy that I pay cash for.

But part of me thinks that is almost a waste of money... sure it would be useful to my kid if I do pop my clogs but I do resent paying it in these lean financial time - especially the disability.

You cant sell overseas life policies to nationals because it would take away from the national program that Japan offers.

Lucky you... I am a Yank :(

It really depends on how much longer you will have dependents. But you can set up a whole of life plan with vanishing premiums and also some additional coin build up. down side is that the payout amount is not as high as the "traditional" life policy, but you make a profit on it and still have cover.

OR, you can go to prudential, get some shitty plan and pay nearly the same amount a month until you are 60 and not get shit from it. The up side is if you do kick the can, the pay out amount is much higher.

Aussies and Kiwis can get a nice life policy... with level premiums until 65 or 70, low premium amount with a nice amount of cover. Its just us Yanks and Britts that have to take other routes that cost more and are not as simple. :(

yup... sucks ass. Health insurance gets even more fucked cause you can only get covered in the states for up to 90 days IF you pay for that benefit package each month...

By my mothers cooking standards that would be totally normal, this and coconuts... she had phases (when not drunk enough to pass out on the floor and try to cook instead) where absolutely everything had to taste coconuts, other times, almond, or oranges...
The rice chicken with mandarine sauce was not bad at all... the fact that it was frozen-pre-made helped a bit... (but usually even meal ready to eat were just treated as random base ingredient to build upon... in order to reach an abomination straight out of a Cronenberg movie...)
