While the pics/vids were interesting enough, "the fappening" was surprisingly unfappable.

On a serious note...do Aussies really tip toe around the natives like that? (All we get stateside are "where's your casino money?!" and "you must be an alcoholic!") Mind you, my experience with Aussies has been here and and the U.S. and has limited to friends...and others. I think most of my Aussie friends would do their best not to make an issue of race at all...whereas others, unfortunately the more numerous group, well...I've never met a more ignorant/racist group in my life. I can't imagining any of them bending at all to not be labelled racists?? (but once again, I've never been to can't say that the cunts I've run into overseas really represent how most of AUS is....I sure as hell wouldn't want some of the abortion movement poster children Americans to be how other countries view Americans, though all too often that is the case)

Err, you lost me at "like that."

It is a sketch from a comedy program, put out by the Indigenous Department of the national broadcaster, notwithstanding that the national multiethnic broadcaster also has a remit to produce programming for indigenous communities as well. I'm sure you realise, but for the sake of completeness the joke is being made linking the expression "playing the race card" with cheesy Mastercard ads. And really nothing more than that.

If you are thinking people are tiptoeing around because the old lady does not become a harridan and yell at the cardholder for pushing in in the line, well, look on Australians as Canadians-lite: most will avoid making a scene unless really, really pushed. There are of course exceptions to this general rule, and they possibly make a greater impact on your impression because of that, but the general mood is to grumble silently inside your head, and think that the cardholder is a bitch, but do nothing about it.

Getting controversial for a moment, you can get a bit of an idea about attitudes by the fact that there is now a special department within the national broadcaster devoted to developing programming addressing indigenous issues (and that I got snarky about that fact). I really am of two minds about that. While I do agree that the progress in getting indigenous faces on TV screens, especially in non-cliched roles, is much slower than it should be, I do personally have an issue with the Indigenous Industry which has grown up around it all. It is one of those issues which I am aware that I do not express my thoughts well, and also it is a controversial issue, so I tend not to talk about it publicly. In a nutshell, I am not convinced in the least that affirmative action is a positive thing for those intended to be "affirmed," and I think it always leaves doubts, both in the mind of the recipients of affirmative action and in the rest of the community, that the officeholder did not gain their position on merit.

In terms of the cliched views of alcoholism and so on, this sketch from the same program might help out

I haven't seen any more than what appears on the youtube channel, some of the comedy falls flat, and in my eyes it concentrates on the urban aboriginal culture, where my experience is more with the rural and remote communities, and I see differences between them.

In terms of whether Australians are more or less racist than other people: I have seen it expressed as "much more casual about racism" and I think there is some truth in that. I get the impression that in many cultures, the racism is there but latent, hidden, a little bit sneaky. I think it is just less hidden in Australia. That doesn't make it better or worse. You do see what you are getting, though.

Which makes sense in modern America and might have had the potential for laughs but the executions was  and I was just confused by it being set in Australia (based on my encounters with what I agree is casual racism by Aussies) since I would have expected more of a "fuck off yah cunt!" or something instead of letting her by because of race?

Pretty much THIS...there are better ways to go about it that don't pit "race" vs. "race."

Well the slightly deeper subtext is that she is leading a pretty yuppie lifestyle and possibly doesn't need the privilege of the race card, but I think she was let by because she is a generally pushy bitch, not because she is pushy Aboriginal bitch.

I'm just waiting for someone to say "but affirmative action is all about reaching a race target of greater priority than merit" so that I can run away saying "see, I can't express myself properly on these issues."

My cousin was a waitress at a higher end restaurant while attending uni...one day while on speakerphone at work (I never really used speakerphone but was repairing a returned part at the time) she blurted out something to the effect of "I hate taking on black customers at the restaurant...they give shitty tips or don't tip at all!!" My co-worker Jerry, who just happens to be of the black persuasion, looks over at me, rolls his eyes and starts shaking his head.

"That's not black people, that's just poor people!" he yells out, loud enough for my cousin to hear.

This was before video calling but I imagine her face was something like  She apologized and that was that..Anyhow, Jerry's wisdom is exactly how view the whole idea of affirmative action. You want to help people who are disadvantaged, you help people that are actually disadvantaged, not pick and choose by race.

I too have been pretty surprised by the casually racist (great way to describe it, wagyl) comments Aussie I've met here have made.

Except everyone I know in the US who works for tips says the same thing. One of my black friends back home even goes out of his way to tip really well because of that. Not because he wants to prove it's not true but because he knows that it is and he feels bad about it. He told me that's why he hated going out with his black friends. He'd always end up paying a lot more because he had to cover the tip and when he'd say something about it they refused to pay more.

I have the feeling that the casual racism comment may have originated with you, Jerk.

The way I see it is the people in Australia are less hung up about it, not so keen be avoid being seen as racist. Once again, no comment on whether that is a good thing or a bad thing. But I also think it can be regarded as much the same as people in Kanto badmouthing Kansai Obahan in animal print tops. No one thinks you shouldn't mention that. So if I can rip into Kansai Obahan, moaning about how loud they are or how stingy, why can't I make a comment about Slopeys or Wogs? That, I think, is the level of thinking.

Yeah, I've heard it from many others as well but hell, I've withheld tips on numerous occasions for shitty service so you also have to factor that type of thing in. Personally, I'd rather they do away with tipping all together but yeah, the neighborhood where my cousin worked was mostly middle class white people, and poor black/brown people....so my guess is she probably encountered the same problems from the poor brown people...though I never asked. (and since she is brown herself, that might have also influenced who gave her what)

Tolerance and cultural sensitivity...neither have to be distinctly associated with race nor does more/less respect need to be given.
