Those gaijin lounge singers in hotels

Postby Cyka UchuuJin » Sat May 02, 2015 9:52 pm

Someone told me recently that they make something like 200.000 per night, plus flights and accommodation. Is that really true? Does anyone know? (yes, SJ, i googled and found nothing)

Some probably can, and perhaps many did once, but in that economy I would say probably not. Also, keep in mind that they can only get 1 or 2 gigs a week at the most unless their agent is top notch and they have a reputation. Most of the ones I have met were nice enough but seemed very confused and grumbly, so one wonders if any last long enough to cash in on any reputation they might make before they get sick of it and go home. I got a strong Toy Boy vibe from the ones I used to drink with in Okinawa; they spoke so much about Finding a Rich Widow they sort of grossed me out.

Looking to pick up some extra work are ya!?

I don't know any lounge singers but I know someone who does the music for a highly rated foreign hotel in Kansai (they have a ton of wine that sells for more than 100,000 yen a bottle) - I got a general idea of the salaries. 200,000 yen per night is way too much.

Do you mean they as in lounge singers in general or that person said he or she makes that much?

Someone told me that they made that much and that pretty much any bands/singers that do all of the lounge cover stuff can make lots.

Not looking to pick up an extra job, but I know someone who it would be very suited for.

If they have a time machine and can travel back to the bubble era, that kind of money should be easy enough to pick up.

Yeah, it was tough making 100,000 a day at age 24...........

Chika,

I smell a touch of the old Easy Money in Japan myth ( :liar: ), but it could be worth looking into if your friend is both good and serious. But I would bet on more like 80,000 a night for a night or 2 a week at the most, at least until they get known and reviewed. I'm just working off the top of my head but that sounds much more reasonable. FYI, I know lots of models that make 200,000 a shoot..........but they only work once every 2 or 3 months. Anyways, ...........................

Sounds like you are right on the myth theory. I'm not going to get into trying to help people get into Japan anyway, there's too many of these bloody gaijin here already. ;)

He He He. Yeah, it just strikes me as One of Those stories people tell but the reality is probably quite different. I would bet there are 3 or 4 people that make the good money you mentioned, and they have talent, a reputation, connections, and a really good agent. The guys I knew down in Okinawa never made really big money and the work was intermittent; I think they used to fly in for 2 or 3 weeks at a time just for their gigs, and they all kind of hated life in Japan. The only people I have ever met that made a living as musicians were all hippy bums that happily took the compromise of an easy life for a low income and I am pretty sure much of their income actually came from teaching English.

Like Yanpa said The Bubble Days are burst, and even back then a lot of those stories were BS

I know a guy that books Western cover bands for bars in 5* hotels all over East and South East Asia not including Japan. I have no idea what they charge but considering the lifestyle he and his family live they must be making pretty good money. Good enough to live full-time in one of those hotels and send their kid to international school. Of course I don't know what other sources of income they have if any so maybe it's not as lucrative as it seems.

My guess is that if you're doing the 5* hotel circuit you can make decent money. Otherwise, it's probably pretty tough.

I'm pretty sure the full time hotel life is a two faced comedy:

If you have to pay for it it's an incredible sum of money.
But for the hotel giving it away, it's just the cost of few toothbrush and clean bedsheets.
Sure, mif you want to go full bean counter retard you bill it as a loss at the full no discount retail price. But for most cases, it's like for trains... One more passenger don't change anything...

That would really depend on the size of the hotel and the popularity of the particular class of room. However, you're right that large international chains with hundreds of rooms at each location can afford to comp some rooms and write them off as losses which is why they do it sometimes.

Stands to reason that the person booking 20 or 30 badly paid bands would be making more than any one band, especially if he takes a piece of the gate or kickbacks from the bands. There simply cannot be a shortage of Western cover bands willing to be Big in Japan. Think Marky Mark without the lucky break.

I still find it weird that people think living in a hotel is attractive, especially with kids. Talk about high potential for nightmarish brats.

whatever happened to that guy who was always posting here about his music? anyone remember him?

as someone who spends 70+ nights per year in a hotel, i can definitely say that hotel living is not attractive. at least not to me. and certainly not in japan, where no less than 4 people say hello/have a good day every time you walk through the lobby and there is no chance ever of just being able to throw on a pair of trackies just to nip out for an evening walk. room service menus never change and there is just so many times you can have a club sandwich with all the pomp and circumstance that comes with it as the guy insists on taking 5 bajillion hours to set the table and arrange your food and condiments while you stand there like an asshole. and even if you do put on the 'do not disturb' because you want to spend your sunday sleeping off a hangover, they'll still call you to ask when you want your room cleaned.

Do you find the walls too thin as well? It seems there is always sound carrying through the walls and floors of people partying or kids going nuts. Makes it awfully hard to either have fun in your own room without disturbing others, or just relax peacefully without hearing some cacophony nearby.

i am always alone in my room, so i don't have the fear of disturbing anyone. i stay in the Westin in Tokyo (not anymore since i live here now and get to deal with all the noise above and to the side of me...) and St Regis in Osaka, and i've never noticed any noise. I did fall through a wall at the Hilton in Osaka once though. I was a little drunk and tripped over something on the way to the toilet, and put my hands out to brace myself for the fall and one hand ended up going right through the very thin plaster wall.

Living in a hotel has never seemed particularly attractive to me but there's a difference between staying in a 5* hotel suite in one place full time and being on the road sleeping in hotels that are within the company budget. Also, these guys are based in SE Asia where eating out costs nothing so even if you have a nice house with a full kitchen there's little incentive to cook except when you have a craving for a comfort food from back home that you can't buy at a restaurant. Anyway, worse than living in a hotel is growing up in the international school system. I've never met anyone who did that turned out well adjusted.

i guess i am a little fortunate in that the Starwood chain is one of our clients and I'm a Platinum member with them, so my rooms on the road tend to be 5* suites. However, recently I was in Singapore at the W and had been upgraded to an amazing suite that had it's own swimming pool. That was when the germanwings crash happened, and it made me very sad to be in such a beautiful room all on my own. it actually made me reassess life/job and i'm making this my last year on the road like this.

i know some people who've gone to international school and are fine. it's the ones who get uprooted every couple years and moved around that are complete messes.

For an unknown, about 35,000 for two sets plus expenses. Flights are unlikely nowadays and hires are almost always local.
So a friend doing this stuff told me.
