Nobody ever likes it when I say it, but it's freaky how similar Americans and Japanese are in so many fundamental ways.

No, no. The formal postwar subsidiary relation I get. I'm talking about deep cultural stuff that goes deeper and longer. The adoration of hierarchy and sycophancy, the enforced conformity and hatred of unsanctioned individuality, and in this case the adoration of the grotesque. IOW, the military state as nation.

It's like the Pacific War only happened because they were both so PO'ed looking in the mirror they lashed out and broke it. I'd include the Brits, but they've been so impotent for so long it would seem like fawning. Plus they don't wash. Say what you will about either the Japanese or the Americans, but at least they wash themselves, and rinse the soap off the dishes after washing up.

I'll take a double triple patty deluxe, on a raft, four by four animal style, extra shingles with a shimmy and a squeeze, light axle grease, make it cry, burn it, and let it swim.

Well, speaking as a country, yeah, sort of............. , but Nah, it's more like a loving neighbour with a nasty sense of humour trying to help. Like Tim Allen's neighbour in Home Improvement, but with extra nasty. What's funny is how so few of you guys can even see the truth in those observations. You are as much like The Japanese (and they as you) as Canadians are like Americans. I often wonder if that's why things the Jpn do get your goat so much (the unwanted mirror), but that's a psycholojism too far for me. But interesting that you equate sociological observations that counter your ideological presuppositions as Hate, sardonic, sarcastic or otherwise. Velly Intalesting, in fact. One could probably even think of another economic powerhouse that shares a similar tendency, if one wished.

BTW, most of the non-rinsers I met in Scotland were English; maybe it has something to do with the lime thing in English water? The Aunty Podeans seem to be just plain dirty.

Anyways, thanks for bothering :biggrin2:

When I came across the same things in China, it didn't bother me as much but I'd say that's due to the higher expectations I have of Japan and the accompanied stubborn arrogance of it obviously the best "because Japanese." (Not that I expect/even want Japan to be a mirror of the US)

To prove his point, I'd have to be assuming something is obviously the best "because made in the USA." Certainly not the case.

Not so sure "made in the USA" carries the same weight it used to among the average American but yeah, there are plenty of ignorant fucks that don't realize it often means made by Mexicans...in a sweatshop that's in the US.

Have they closed the "Chinese kept in a compound on Guam = Made in USA" loophole then?

 Probably not...but other than the potential tax savings, I don't see the incentive in the "Made in the USA" tags on most of the crap that comes out of there.

Nice to know, but as a friendly reminder many of your Japan rants do imply or seem to assume a Normal that is countered to how it's done in Japan, and that can be easily assumed to be USA! USA! whether you mean it or not. I do enjoy the rants, though

As for that gaping hole between where SJ is originally from and where we're from, Yes, and any quick car ownership chart will show he's right about their economic patriotisms. Think people that think Trump has some value. The same goes for Canada. Most of my originally wasteland friends in Whistler are merciless in their disdain for my Subaru, or Rice Buggy, which is almost a default vehicle in the Vancouver area. I can see their point, though, compared to their Real Cars: it's reliable, comfortable, almost economical and has AWD. It even had map lights behind the rear view mirror back in 1993. It makes it hard to Drive Tough when the thing works perfectly most of the time.

Here's a sample of their thinking: http://www.businessweek.com/debateroom/ ... eriod.html

I can't find the chart I was thinking of. It was made by R.L. Polk of Carfax fame, it seems.

A ready market in the Nascar-Springsteen fan demographic who wouldn't buy something made "goodness knows where." There is a lot of nationalism in consumerism, everywhere, not just in Japan. Of course, it only has an effect within the USA but the effect there is large enough to pay the airfares for the Chinese seamstresses and build razorwire surrounded barracks to lock them in.

Feeling I get here in LA is `everything is made in China` and nobody seems to care anymore. Nascarville definitely cares more but even still, plenty of that junk is made in China as well.

Its all lip service. The central US says they want Made in the USA goods, but then wants it cheap too so they buy from Wal Mart as cost is King for 90+% of them.
