Civilian Prisoner of War

Postby wagyl » Mon Nov 23, 2015 12:17 pm

Hyperlink meanderings from a random Mulboyne tweet has lead me to the account of Cecil Saunders as a civilian POW, captured on board a ship in the Indian Ocean by German raiders (sidetrack: the institutionalised piracy during wartime -- on all sides -- was a bit of an eye opener but I should have expected that really) and eventually handed to the Japanese for safekeeping after some initial stiff reluctance. They were kept in a nunnery in Fukushima, in a limbo where they were German prisoners so it was a long time before the Red Cross knew they were there (although that is apparently not a unique experience). An interesting read.
On this day there was a very tragic accident, when Mrs, Dimitrocopoulas, the Dutch wife of a Greek Radio Operator, was killed by a parcel of food dropped from one of the aeroplanes.

Stop sniggering, for any number of reasons!

What a way to die!

And she is not even considered a war hero in the Netherlands.

I suppose her maiden name was "van der Lugt"*...

*) Name meaning "from the air" in classical Dutch
