Are you a unique little snowflake?

Postby wagyl » Thu Jul 07, 2016 12:36 pm

An excel file compiled by the Ministry of Justice setting out nationality of foreigners (separated into China, Republic of Korea, Philippine, Brazil, Vietnam, Nepal, United States, Taiwan and the rest of the world) for each municipality.

Other options, separated by various options such as nationality, visa type, age and sex, prefecture, and detailed data for top five nationalities, are available.

Previous year's data also available.

A round-about hat-tip -- maybe a hat-twirl -- to Mulboyne.

More 'mericans than I expected in my area....actually, the crazy cat lady (not sure of her nationality because I've only seen her screaming at people) nearby is the only visible candidate I've seen since I moved there. (the 40-something year old, eye-liner wearing emotard nearby is already a confirmed brexit citizen)

Does not include municipalities in the Northern Territories!

Well spotted.

They haven't done an accurate count there for 70 years. For some reason or other.

Because I don't the fuck know it exists.

I am glad you have brought it to our attention with such elan.

That data seems to be not being renewed. For example, where did you get the 2015 data? I can't see which file you got that from.

Looking at the data from 2013, you might be able to say that Singaporeans punch above their weight in the overstaying stakes. If I have the time and the interest, it might be interesting to compare legal/illegal ratios. I have a feeling that the Singaporeans might be the winner.

Thank you. Did you note that the Korean numbers are decreasing? You should give them credit.

Damn, my cover is blown

In other news, I was in the local konbini a while back and was amused to notice it was 100% kokumin free (me, the Chinese baito and some black dude). Bloody foreigners everywhere these days.

As further confirmation that you can now have a zairyu card without a juminhyo, I see that there are 1223 foreigners of no fixed address.

Under the previous Alien Registration system, if you removed yourself from the address register, your entire registration was cancelled.

I was starting to feel sorry for the foreigners on these islands with one Filipina. But then I realised that that is probably better than being on an island with just two Filipinas.

Surely not even government office working Japanese men can pretend to know how many illegal residents there are. It's a logical necessity: if they know they're illegal they're not resident for long, and if they don't know of them not even Donald Rumsfeld could help them. Are they measuring by hara-gei and body odour?

No one pretends the figures are accurate. Just as long as the figures trend in the correct direction over time, everyone is happy.

I thought you understood how things worked.

Potentially, they are cross-referencing expired visas and records of departure. Potentially. I don't know if they are actually doing that.

Remember that new visa type for "highly skilled professionals" with the point system? A whopping 1504 people are living here under that system now.

That means I've personally met at least 1% of the people who hold that visa.

Maybe you can have some input into a question of mine then: I wonder how many of them would have been eligible for an existing visa type, but applied for that one for reasons of convenience. It may well be that the highly skilled professional visa is less convenient to apply for, so the answer may be zero, but I will ask anyway.

Edit: I see that they are overwhelmingly Chinese, so that answers my question: probably most would find difficulty with other visas.

I also see one journalist visa of no fixed address...... Now THAT is a unique little snowflake.

All the guys I know of who got it are Chinese or Indian IT engineers. They applied because it's apparently easier to get than a regular work visa (I don't actually believe that to be true), you get a longer period of stay, and you get a fast track to PR. IT engineers are in high demand and shouldn't have a problem getting a regular work (engineering) visa so I can't imagine the highly skilled pro visa would be any easier to get. It might not be tougher either but even it if is, the second two points probably make it worth a little extra hassle. Especially since most of the Chinese and Indian guys in IT seem to want to stay in Japan long term.

So, as I suspected: no real nett increase in applicants, just another option for them to apply for, and mainly attracting people who would have been using the existing programs anyway.
