Where can I buy kangaroo, ostrich or antelope meat ?

Postby Maciamo » Fri Jun 13, 2003 7:25 pm

It's sad that in such a culinary paradise like Japan, one can hardly find any other meat that beef, pork and chicken (or whale)

I used to be able to find kangaroo, ostrich/emu, antelope, deer, rabbit, pheasant or even camel in my town's supermarket, and that was in Europe, not in Australia.

In Japan, even finding a place selling lamb is a pain in the neck.

Anybody has a idea ?

Is there any Australian restaurants in Tokyo that might serve kangaroo or emu steaks ?

Why not email the Kangaroo Industry Association in Australia

info@kangaroo-industry.asn.au

They might be able to tell you about who is importing into Japan.

My wife and mother in law used to buy lamb for me every now and then. It's REAL expensive.

And in Hachinohe, you can buy canned horsemeat.

Don't know about anywhere else. Never really lived anywhere else.

Horsemeat is everywhere.. often mixed with beef in tins like a pate style for sandwiches.. bought it once by accident and actually tasted quite good..

*so learning the kanji for various meats is essential..

basashi is considered a delicacy and I have eaten it too but as a curtesy only.. 8O

Nectar of the barbarians. Anyone who eats basashi renounces his claim to being human and should be forced to eat without utensils from a bowl on the floor. Beverages should be consumed by lapping.

This coming from one whose only communication comes in grunts, scatological insults and venom filled invective.

We let him out his cage to try and train him to act like a human being. :D

I had horse shishkabob once. Delicious, but tough.

And Gai, Japanese must be barbarians then since they eat it all over Japan.

please, let's not go over this again....
(cf. this thread)
this has been addressed before and it leads nowhere.

once and for all : horses are nice animals. but they are animals!!!
eating animals is part of the human nature as we are ("evolved", yet, but still) animals too. omnivorous, and eating flesh among other things.
if you choose not to eat one type of animal or one specific species, it's your choice, but it DOES F*CKING NOT MAKE YOU A BETTER PERSON THAN those who chose to eat this particular meat. thinking any other way is as much prejudice as the so-called science nazis used to advocate.
full stop.

if you are not a vegeterian, you "kill". it's as simple. get over it. that's nature...

COME ON man!

Lighten up, yakitori.

It's just light banter.

Am I the only one here that doesn't let Gai get under his skin?

He's an odd one, but he knows I respect him even through the insults.

Oh well.

hey, it's "katakori", not "yakitori"....
(was it a mistake or a joke...)

anyway, i'm fine with the insults.
but i'm tired of people who have taboos and a f*cked up so called civilisation which make them think other people who don't think like them are "less civilized" humans. this is wrong, and it is dangerous. just look at any history books, please. since we are in a japan-orientated forum, just have a look at what japanese soldiers did in china not so long ago... once again, it is not horse eaters who have to justify themselves for being human and open-minded.

it could have appeared that i was getting angry, or shouting (virtually), but i was just trying to cut wherever this conversation was going (ie, just like the previous post i linked to) before it started again on the nazi propaganda of untermenschen...

this forum is called "f*cked gaijin" and it means exactly that! people who are clever enough to be open to another culture/CIVILISATION/country, but in the same time are ABLE to make a step backward and THINK. if someone just can't do any of this, why on earth would i come here insulting me?

Do NOT believe anything Gomi Girl says. Anyway, regarding the consumption of certain animals. It is my humble opinion that every cultured person respects the beauty, power and grace of the equine. The horse is a noble creature. Honest, sometimes funny, true to itself the horse never lies.

A more beautiful, symbolic animal does not exist. God created the horse to make man better. To consume a horse is akin to cannibalism. It is an errant, disgusting act that should be punishable by flogging in a public square. Study the horse, behold the horse, team with the horse.

But don't eat the fucking horse.

Steak de cheval

Postby Taro Toporific » Wed Jun 18, 2003 11:13 pm

American Oyaji wrote:Tastes like beef almost.

Generally speaking, in France a steak de cheval--horse steak is better than beef. It's deep red, tasty, and twice as popular in France than beuf steak for good reason.
Added benefit: French horses are MUCH easier to break/train than Ango ones...fractious animals are eliminated from the gene pool.

HORSE-EATING FOREIGNERS AIDED IN CONGRESS BY ONE TEXAS REPUBLICAN
Niagara Falls Reporter, Nov. 15 2005, Opinion, by John Hanchette---
President George W. Bush signed without fanfare a $100 billion agricultural spending bill that contained many routine expenditures, but hid buried within a raging and painful controversy which can only grow in our American culture. It is the incredibly widespread slaughter of horses for human consumption....
....we shouldn't have to watch American horses "chopped up for export cuisine" -- despite the frequent arguments we don't have much business telling another culture how and what to eat. Even if that's so, we don't sell our dogs to South Korea, where such animals are considered gourmet food, do we? Telling many racing fans -- including me -- that Ferdinand and Exceller have been consumed as table fare is like telling baseball fans Babe Ruth was eaten by cannibals....more...

Ferdnand was sold to an expediter when the stud farm had neared bankruptcy. Sadly enough, he was the cause. Purchased at an extremely high multi-million dollar price as a classics winning stallion, he was totally unsuccessful at stud.

After the bubble, and nearing bankruptcy, the owner sold him to an "expediter" to dispose of him. The expediter system is a little know system in Japan, where if you cannot ask anyone else you ask them and they take property, business physical assets or whatever, paying the owner a token price or a percent of the final price.

The writer in the above case was ranting beyond reason about keiba to make his agenda. Nobody knows and it is probably true that Ferdnand was sent to the slaughter house by the "expediter", but he was not consumed!! Eating a racehorse would be like eating a table leg. They have been trained as muscular well conditioned athletes with special diets, that alone eliminates them from the basashi crowd. The majority of major racing organizations and breeding farms in the business in Japan and elsewhere have actual retirement homes for race horses after their racing and/or breeding career. The price of a thoroughbred is also restrictive, being in the average of 4-50,000 US dollars in Japan for yearlings. Even if they were to be so inclined, people do not throw that kind of cash into the meatgrinder. Any talk about eating a racehorse is just that, talk.

The writer is using the two classic winners to magnify his point, but he is dead wrong about the remaining 99.9% of the rest of the thoroughbreds in racing.

He is right about the other part of the story that horsemeat is consumed. It is consumed in more countries than he listed. Japan imports most of its horsemeat for the table from Australia and the United States. These particular animals are a produced in a manner that is not much different from bovines and ovines.

People of the world are for the most part, carnivores whether some others like it or not and they are not about to change to vegetarian overnight, if ever. If you like venison, that is not going to stop vegetarians from saying "don't eat Bambi"!

But they don't eat racehorses, although I have bet on a few that could have been served up without any of my tears.
