Inside Japanese Prison

Postby GuyJean » Wed Jun 18, 2003 11:56 pm

Right now, on BS1 (CH. 7), on the show Close up Gendai, they're showing video of inside Japanese prisons; about the increase in drug addict prisoners.. Interesting.

You say that drug abuse is on the up? How is that different from any other prison? I know that in England, the condition of prisons is crap and the level of drug abuse is high anyway. It's so bad that the English government is launching all kinds of inquiries into it now (or they were according to what I last heard).

Prison is Prison...there is no such thing as a nice prison that is violence or drug free.undefinedundefinedundefinedundefined

I don't know if NHK has satellite shows online...

It basically covered how prisoners, who are addicted to drugs, deal with withdrawals in the confines of prison. I thought the most interesting part was seeing what the prisons look like from the inside, since there's been so many reports of abuse recently.

In this particular prison, it didn't look so bad; each cell was about 1 6-tatami room size with a small window. The ceilings were higher than my apartment! :?

I have a gaijin buddy that did 3 days in jail for fighting with a yak. He sat on the floor of a concrete cell with 3 other japanese guys (not the guys he fought with) the entire time. They had a hole to piss in and a blanket to sleep ON. He learned a lot of new Japanese, and taught them some f'ed up English. He never had any charges pressed on him, or a trial or record....but he said it sucked major ass eating rice soup for 3 meals a day and sitting on a concrete floor...

 You could call 'em "Yak" or better refer to them as Yat-chan or barazoku  Image

Refer to Introduction to Yakuza Japanese (language).

Totally true. My friend owned a bar in a pretty industrial neighborhood, so every so often he would get some yakuza customers. Most of what he learned was what they are saying when they are drunk and it sounds like "Grrrrrumple enyaaaaAAAA". It was only studied to know what it means, and never to use it. But that is good advice.

I knew a guy in college who always referred to himelf as "watakushi" and another that was more inclined to say "ore" or "ware" in class.

You have to find that nice balance......

I would have figured that they'd be lest violent if they listened to Enyaaaaa. It's supposed to calm you, isn't it?
