FAST FOOD

Postby 40 Fl. oz. » Sun Jul 13, 2003 5:33 am

CRAP!!! I have forgotten how to order fast food.

Lemme give it a try.

cheeseburger de hitotsu to fried potato o L saizu de hitotsu to nomimono ha cola o L saizu de hitotsu.

Someone fix it up, please! And don't turn it into some crazy ass honorific shit. I want to talk like a normal young guy would.

Also, what will they say in order to ask you if you'll be eating "here" or "to go". I seem to remember they say something other than "koko de tabreu?"

I don't think there is any need to point out that there is one of each item. As for sizes, I always said "L no coca-cola" and such. But, me being a gaijin, the employees didn't correct me, so I may be wrong. They'll also prompt you for things like sizes, too.

tanpin means by itself.. so if you want a hambaga tanpin de.. means just a hamburger..
Mainly the way I order, is kore hitotsu, kore futatsu hehehe

point at the picture and wala it works!

and when you are finished ordering, they'll usually ask, iijyodesuka? You can say hai or iijyoudesu.. either function the same.

BUMP!!!

Postby 40 Fl. oz. » Mon Jul 14, 2003 10:59 pm

So how do you both determine what size you are asking for?

for example, how would you order a large drink and a large frie and a cheeseburger?

Also, should you be saying "sore hitotsu" if youre pointing at the wall?

And what's "iijyoudesuka" asking?

talkin bout macs.. is it me, or does the sauce in the big macs taste different? and isnt it weird you get fillet of fish in paper rather than a carton? that doesnt feel right..

quick question.. well i've gone down from 120 kilos to 108 since spring, but now i'm wondering, just what weight i should be?

i'm 186 cm tall with "broad shoulders" yeh right, well am overweight.. and have lost weight on my stomach/chest, but despite trying to walk for at least 2 hours several times a week, don't seem to have lost any weight at all on my legs.. any ideas?

dont mean to hijack the thread sorry, but thought it wasnt worth clogging up with a new one

i'd say ""iijyoudesuka" means, is that all? i tend to order like a kid, as in "cheesebuger futatsu" - shows fingers just in case, and most fast food places understand large medium small, tho i use chisaii/ medium/oki shit who am i fooling here? i always bloody go for "oki" as that about equals medium in the uk.. ^^

i'd guess ordering could be a great way to pick up a date also...

I always order in English and it always works. They ask questions in Japanese, though, and I reply again in eigo. Hambaga (teriyakibaga or cheesebaga) to fried potatos to coke kudasai. That's English to me and it always gets me what I want.

i think you answered you own question... ;)
FIRST, i want to say cheers for the first 12 kilos!!! :D this must have been hard, and it's always a success to lose a few... so 12!
BUT, don't stop there!!
your ideal weight is when your body feels "right". means good breathing, good shitting, no back/stomach pain, no dry/oily skin, no white tongue, and so forth. you might get this when you're 80 kilos. if you have a lot of muscles, you might get it at 90...
if you're on a coke and big mac diet, you'll have to do a lot of sport to eliminate this. try cutting the sweet drinks off to start with, then some of the fat. you will feel much better with less coca cola in your body... (and i'll get a lawsuit with this thread...)

Height/weight

Postby Caustic Saint » Tue Jul 15, 2003 11:27 pm

I'm close to your height, at about 183cm. I got a lot of comments about my weight (telling me I need to lose some of it) in Korea and I'm about 90 kilos. I have pretty broad shoulders (not sure if you were serious or joking about yours with the "") and a large frame. I do know that when I was in the army and weighed about 80kg people told me I was skinny, so I'm guessing I should be around 84 or so to be decent.

I also carry a lot of weight in my legs, mostly from all the running I had to do in the army and years of cycling, so I guess maybe I weigh more than I appear to.

I wouldn't get too hung up on hitting some "magic number" for your weight. Just like Katakori said, your ideal weight is what feel right for you.

Maybe most of those who have been here long enough to have a good command of Japanese have kicked their filthy McD's addiction long ago.

I've managed to mostly avoid McDonalds so far... apart from the quick order of "small potato" to pacify the FG 2 yr old.

I prefer silver octopus balls, and a pathetic command of Japanese is no problem there, there's only one thing on the menu.

If you really want to know how the locals order McDonalds you could get a part time job there. :P

as always, thanks a lot for the advice dudes!

well, i suppose you could say i have rugby playing shoulders..

maybe, no matter how much we love the local food, mcds offers something so familiar to us, its hard to resist? and its way cheaper than moss/freshness even if its microwaved and they *seem* to cook their food, though you never can tell

before i came here, i said to myself that i would never eat fast food, hey that didnt last long..

mostly i buy a sandwitch at seicomart... on my days off i tend to walk around the city for 4/6 hours, its a good way to learn the city, find stuff to take photos off, do some excercise and get out of the house..

sometimes though, its hard to resist macs as they are everywhere... i tend to just go for 2 cheeseburgers and some ocha from a vending machine and munch them in odori park...

hamburger rice though, what a golden combi! and at bikkuri donkey you can get a meal for less than a macs one.. ^^

Yeah, what GG said.

A normal young guy doesn't give a shit what the staff at McDs think of him.

or, maybe it's not the staff you're hoping to impress with your perfect Japanese...

It doesn't matter how good his Japanese is, a normal young guy will not impress a date by taking her to McDonalds :P

GG's Japanese is the closest to what should be said when ordering at a restaurant. If I were you, 40 Fl oz, don't try to "speak like a regular guy". It's obvious you don't have a good enough command of the language yet to pull it off. Just use textbook polite Japanese, and you will get a better overall reception from the staff behind the counter.

yeah, what kamome said.

But also I just thought of something.

If you are buying cheese burger fries and a drink.

GET A SET.

After they ask you for here or to go and ask you want you want, just say

cheesebaga setto o hitotsu kudasai.

They'll ask you "o nomimono wa?"

You say "L sizu no coke kudasai"

They'll say, "yoroshii desu ka?" and if thats all you say "sore ijyoudesu" or "yoroshii" desu.

Ordering sets is faster and easier.

Kotatsuneko,
The food might seem a little off to you because you aren't eating britich McDs. They change the recipes a bit depending on what region you go to.
Their recipe is based on (at least it still was 3 years ago) late 80s USA recipe's. They still deep fry their pies (not this baked crap they have in the USA now) The nuggets are juicy because they were fried (again, not this baked crap)

I actually do not eat McDs here in the US anymore. It's kinda depressing. I eat Wendy's or Burger King. American McDs is not as good as it used to be and is not as good as Japan's McDs.

maybe the extra frying was to satisfy the builders and truckers? still, i've yet to be given a stale burger over here..

Yeah, Wendy's is like the gourmet fast food restaurant (in the States, anyway). This of course excludes the really good gourmet-type regional fast food restaurants like FatBurger or In-N-Out in California.

Wendy's Japan isn't that good, though. You're getting a lot less for your money than you would in the States.

Ok, but do they have 100Yen Menu?

Seriously, do they use the America marketing tricks like extra-value menu's and such?

THere are extra value menus and 100 yen menus--but portions are smaller, the meat patties are thinner, the bread is like styrofoam. A large order of fries is like a small or medium in the States. So that "value menu" is less meaningful here (but not a total rip off either).
