English teaching whores

Postby kamome » Tue May 21, 2002 3:33 pm

Well, one problem you might face if you get a job at a web design firm (or any other company) and try to teach English simultaneously, is that many employers force their employees to sign an agreement not to work anywhere else, similar to a non-competition clause in other kinds of contracts. Even English teaching companies themselves usually ask their employees not to work anywhere else during their term of employment. One possible rationale for this is that a competing job would presumably be a distraction from the responsibilities of the main job.

However, there are people who teach English under the table for cash or get around the rules by bartering English lessons for other benefits like meals or gifts. There are other threads on this site that discuss this dilemma in further detail; go check it out.

Actually there are quite a few IT jobs out there - but most of them will expect you to be bilingual in Japanese and English. Most websites here are both. It's not the most brilliant time to be looking for a job with one of the foreign web design companies - most are retrenching huge amounts of staff at the moment.

I freelance as a web designer and even the jobs I receive from foreign clients expect me to be able to handle page design in Japanese and English. Also if you work for a Japanese company you must also expect to do all of the computer work in Japanese.

Keep checking on the online job boards though and good luck! :D
