Could anyone suggest a good bank to use???

hey gai's,
i was wondering if you all could tell me which banks are good... i'm looking for a bank that is present in the US and in Japan, and that i won't lose a fortune in if i try to transfer money back in forth. i've heard wells fargo has a good international program, and banks in japan, but i don't have one near where i live. are there any others you all could suggest?? thanks!!

Citibank is the default bank of choice for most FGs. They have online banking and 24 hour ATMs, which most Japanese banks still don't have for some reason.

HSBC is not big in Japan nor in the US. The Post Office of CItibank are the best ones that I have seen. Both accept North American debit cards as they are connected to the Cirrus network.

I heard Citibank still charges $40-$50 for wire transfers between US-Japan/Japan-US even if you have an account w/ Citibank in both countries.

Can someone confirm or debunk this? The Citibank guy on the phone was a total impatient jack-off :evil:

hmmmm.... $40 - $50 is the normal fee for wiring money to Japan. i was hoping to avoid a lot of the fee's of wiring money, a lot of hassle paying bills in the us, etc. if i used a bank that had a presence in both Japan and in the US, i thought i would be able to avoid a lot of this (guess not). does anyone know the strongpoints of Citibank? i've been reading around, and a lot of people DO use them.

The transfer fee for wiring currency between the US and Japan isn't quite that high. I think it's in the 2000yen range for transfers to the US.

I find that the fee acts as an effective restraint on frequent transfers. Usually I wait for at least a month or two to build up some cash reserves and then wire a big chunk of cash so that I only have to bear the transfer fee infrequently.

I have been using Citibank for about 10 years without problems. I often am stuck in Malaysia, Singapore, Korea and Taiwan for weeks and I can use the ATM to get local currency without paying a service charge.
You have to keep a minimum to avoid service charges and I forget the amount.
I also get my paycheck sent from the US and my company transfers it straight to my Citibank account.
