"breakfast in japan- my life with natto"

Postby graline » Thu Nov 13, 2003 11:22 am

an amusing little anecdote i found...=^_^=

The waitress was still waiting. If I didn't eat it, she might do something odd, like go off in the corner and commit suicide. Did I want her to commit suicide?

Yes, at Wed Nov 12 21:20:11 2003 EST, you lit up the world. The world is Dimmest. It was Dimmest.

Eating the Natto is not so bad, but the problem is I burp it up the rest of the day and it's gross.

Ahhhhh, "breakfast in japan": not even Japanese people like it.
Go to any breakfast buffet in major hotel and 80% of the people are eating the alien ("western") breakfast not the Japanese one. Japanese kids won't touch the natto nowadays in modern 'burbs like mine in Kohoku New Town. Natto sales are waaay down and rice comsumption has been down for the past 20 years now. Down on my rice ranch in Shikoku, we hardly bother to sell the rice harvested (except for the min. amount to collect the crop bonus from the J-gov't).

I had a funny experience with natto.

On hearing how terrible it was, I vowed never to eat it if it was ever offered to me.

After a few years here, I was watching TV one day and suddenly looked down at my plate. "Hey, is this natto?", I asked.

Turns out I had been eating it for years without ever realizing it. To me it's just beans, the taste or smell don't get to me at all. Then again I turn my nose at some kinds of fish & oysters etc.

That's another funny thing, I prefer certain kinds of sashimi to cooked fish.

Grossest thing I ever tried to eat was sparrows at a local yakitori-ya. I nibbled a bit but just looking at them was enough to make me feel sick. :puke:

Tried the stuff once... The taste, smell, texture and whatnot didn't get to me really, I just couldn't eat it because it triggered my gag reflex rather violently.

"sparrow" yakitori

The sparrow yakitori is blehhhh because the heads and beaks are bitter. More worrying is that 5-10% of the "sparrows" are songbirds mistakely caught in the glue traps. In some cases in the countryside, your "sparrow yakitori" is endangered songbird yakitori. :shakeh:

Here's a freaky long-running daily-ish manga about family life and natto...

OK, here is a funny story about natto.

It was my first New Year after being married. Me and my father-in-law had been drunk the night before and I woke up and suddenly had the desire to eat natto.

My wife looked at me and was like..."Honto?" I said yeah. She showed me how to put it together. mustard...shoyu....stir till bubbly....dump it on the rice and eat it up.

And it tasted just as I imagined it when I woke up that morning.

I had swore I would never eat it too.

I CANT eat shiokara. Thats nasty.

And Chawanmushi...UGH.

Boiled bird products gag me. That includes eggs.

don't know what tea eggs are.

But I hate boiled eggs. Boiled chicken and turkey.

any sort of boiled bird product makes me gag. I'd rather go hungry than eat boiled bird products, .....AND I HAVE.
