I had a good time in Taipei a few years ago. I was there for a week on business. I was taken to great places for dinner etc and I had a chance to go shopping at the night markets. Highly recommended.

But the city looked like it was either waiting for an earthquake or a missile as the streets were not in the best state of repair.

as if by magic, the phone works now... it only took me being very confrontational and playing a drinking game while on the phone. everytime he was retarded, i took a shot to try and give him a handicap advantage... i got very drunk.

meeting up with a girl i met at the uni tomorrow though. it should be fun, studying, a more personal tour of taipei, and just talking. It was just many little things that have been adding up to last night's rant.... i am doing better now though, and my Mandarin is now enough to carry out a financial transaction and not sound like an idiot (as long as the transaction involves pijou, my god). kanji abilities are VERY useful here. I can usually have a written conversation if i am forced to.

oddly enough, this trip became much better after meeting up with a few girls and hanging out with them, funny how that works. I need to be careful now, or i will have a girlfriend in the US, Taiwan, and Japan.... :P

But this is just your first gut reaction based on some unfortunate experiences. Believe me, Taipei is the place to be. The women are beautiful and with your basic Mandarin you will do fine. It is just going to take some time for you to adjust...how long are you going to be there?

Believe it...there are many Gaijin who much prefer Taiwan over Hong Kong or other Asian cities. I don't understand why you are comparing it to Hong Kong or the Mainland...it is a unique and different place and given time you will enjoy it. As for your Communist comment, the Chiang statues and photos are only out of respect....free speech and democracy are way beyond both Hong Kong or the Mainland.

Give us a status of how it goes after you have been there awhile.

I've never been to Taiwan but I've mostly heard good things about. I'm surprised by your impression of the food since food critics and experts claim it's the best place in the world to get many types of Chinese food (the cultural revolution had it's effects on cuisine on the mainland aparently).

Taipai is a bad copy of the concrete slums of Tokyo but I agree with Samurai_Jerk that the food there was the best I ever had. Of course I've traveled there on OPM as a guest of restaurateurs.

Now for the girls there...well let's just say the place is bi-polar.
In the counryside you can run into the Chinese version of chaperones but on the other hand... rich girls in the city will pay you for your talents as you swing from a street light.

I am indeed angsting here in Japanaland, but for different reasons. I can tolerate life here, but I need real classes, and the administration is seriously pissing me off. Leaving early would have little to do with Japan as a whole, and more to do with classes.

I lived there for a while and I certainly didn't see anyone shitting on the streets. Taipei is dirty and polluted for sure, but the people were way nicer than here in Tokyo. People you don't know will invite you to eat with them, talk to you on the streets. The girls were friendly too. If it wasn't for the pollution I would have stayed longer.

Went to Taiwan once... Last time I saw that many Mercobenz it was at a factory tour... Didn't stay long enough to have a deep reading of the place... But me Djooly summed it up quite fast... "looks like everywhere else" (read anyother big city(tm) ) You get that bad 'generica' after taste.. Like Nagoya, Seoul, Tokyo, Bonn, New York, theres bits that are different... But mostly the same.

For Tokyo even some place near the imperial palace feels like Paris when the weather agrees. One time I needed to go back to the hotel, but it looked so much like Paris that I instinctively searched for a Bus stop of the line 67 or 21, because it looked like a place in paris where both lines are crossing before heading separately to the terminus where I was living... Felt totally lost... took a taxi instead...

Same feeling as in a fever dream... without the talking cheezburger or my ex trying dresses made with the skins of her enemies... (yup, the therapy needed to get rid of that nightmare was quite costly... and ended up with the psy resigning... didn't know they could do dat...)

Taiwan, which pursues diplomacy in the same way I go about trying to get laid -- that is, anyone at all will do -- was arguably even hornier about being called "honorary white" than the alarmingly large number of Japanese who welcomed this dubious honor were.

Anyhow, I don't know what point I'm trying to make in this post, but I guess I just wanted to brag about being paid to study such worthless bullshite in this day and age, take a dig at the Japanese who were so delighted to be called "honorary whites" and perhaps rile McTojo.
