Advise on my new Eikaiwa school?

For those of you teaching Eikaiwa, what have you found to be the best form of advertising? I have hand delivered ads to houses and I have done a little advertising using newspaper inserts. But so far nothing has really impressed me. The response is slow. Also what kind of ads are the best? Is it good to use something funny? Anyone have any advise for a new businessman? Any good ideas in general for a newbie?

Put on the PONGI hat and use the Pongi Hammer of Mirth on them at the train station.




(Ok, seriously. Handing out Tissue Pack ads at the train station is a better approach. It's only 5-10yen per pack and effective if a Blue-hair-Blond-eyes alien FG does the Tissue Time hand out. Funny ads can work like the NOVA bunny, but test your approach on many native speakers before going public.)

Buy a little mini car, decorate it in flashy colors with your school logo all over it. Then drive around with a bull horn and make up some jingle that is Engrishy, but that any moron in Japanese could understand.

Yep, discounts for students who get friends is good idea as well as the 20-40,000yen finders fee for a 6-months-of-lessons contract.

Advice is a noun. Advise is a verb. Call me a dick but that's my advice. Learn this kind of shit. It couldn't hurt. But since this is Japan it probably won't help either. Getting the word out is the easy part.

-Have a party
-Advertise on the net
-Get some sexy gaijin girls (and guys) and use them to spread the word by mouth...SEX SELLS - bottom line
-Get to know you neighbors, local restaurant owners...etc. They all have relatives and friends.

Basically, just being a nice person who is willing to give a little before taking will help a great deal.
