I don't know about the rest of you F*cked Gaijin, but I just for the life of me can't understand the whole thing. Can any of you give me any perspective from the North American point of view, or British for that matter. It's not like they have banned rice, or sushi. Or am I just too dense to understand this. I thought this food wasn't even that healthy. And some Japanese were saying it was the cause of disease and obeisity. THey should be rejoicing, not crying. :cry2:

Same here.. I have a 24 hour place just near my house and they proudly display an Aussie Beef sign.. (but it seems more fat than meat)

but it is great when I get home late (everyday) and don't feel like cooking (always) and the combini only has yucky bentos left (often).

Plus at 290 yen it is a bargain.

But am off soon to have a home cooked meal from my (almost) sister-in-law.. yeah!!

I haven't eaten gyudon in a couple of years. Ever since the mad cow thing hit Japan, and ever since a J-friend of mine told me that the gyu is the cheapest and most unhealthy on the market, it turns my stomach to look at gyudon. Before mad cow, I would eat it once in a while and I agree it tasted pretty good (even better with a raw egg on top).

Where I live it is an 'exotic' food but filling, tasty and a hell of a lot better than some of the take aways on offer

Some folks are really getting testy...

I like it. Raw egg, a shake of the seasoning.. damn I am good to go.

Why don't they use Aussie, Tassie, or Argetinie bifu? Or hell even domestic and just raise the price a tad????

I don't get them.. is this some sort of incentive for the government to accept the US BSE tainted meat?

I seriously think it will come back within the next year. I sense a big scam to get loads of publicity.

Man...

I MISS Gyu-don. It's one of my favorite Japanese foods.

And the Gyudon is going bye bye because of the Mad Cow stupidity.

The U.S. is still banning imports of Japanese beef so the Japanese are saying screw you and they'll probably get Aussie or NZ beef.

I used to be a Yoshinoya gyudon addict. My habit was 2-3 a day until I checked into the Betty Ford Hospital and cleaned myself up.

I still get the urge for Yoshinoya once in a while, usually late at night after consuming many healthy Asahi Super Drys.

Not that I would even eat that much but, they had a campain where if you bought 2 you get the 3rd free.

as gomi mentioned earlier it is far to full of fat, and the worst kind that sinuei kind that gets stuck between your teeth. I also hate the onions on it.
Am I still not allowed to have a sig?

Gyu don- yummy yummy

Postby Ol Dirty Gaijin » Thu Feb 12, 2004 11:18 pm

After the gym, late at night. Not as bad half the junk you could buy.

They generally don' t use Aussie beef because the fat content is not high enough, and also because of the belief that grain feed beef (US and Japan) has a different taste.

The beef I see at the "supa" would generally not be sold in OZ because of the push towards lean beef in Australia.

If they want to look at fat in the japanese diet, take notice of how much karaage, tonkatsu and other deep fried monsters goes before your eyes in a week.
Never underestimate the power of very stupid people in large groups.

Oyaji-sama,

Is Hawaii a Japanese place in US as well? Or is it actually part of Japan as there are more Japs than Gaijins there?

just don't call me a racist yet, an aidoru group called Japsactually debuted this month.

When I was in Hawaii in 1994, it was disconcerting. Riding down Nimitz Highway on a scooter with all the Japanese neon signs around.

But I don't consider it a Japanese place.

Yeah, there is quite a bit of fat and it does get stuck in your teeth but in Japan who really cares about teeth anyway.
The only way to each Yoshinoya is with lots and lots of shoyu. Take the bottle turn it upside down for at least 5 seconds. Forget what the doctor told you about too much salt, etc. just take an extra dose of your high blood pressure medecine. And you can never have too much ginger. The more the better.

Postby no hit » Fri Feb 13, 2004 4:23 pm

yoshigyuu was a staple of my diet for the last year... nami-tamago.. but i never saw another gj in there.. i always thought i had a secret.

now i guess i'm limited to ootaya (really good/not-so-cheap) and my local ramen-ya (really good/ super convenient).

any suggestions you guys have to fill the dirt-cheap/deliciously-grimy/every-station-has-one-nearby vacancy? maybe mac fits the bill, but for some reason i feel like an idiot when i go there.
I once knew a man who was dyslexic, but he was also crosseyed, so everything came out right.

Katsu ya and Ten ya part of the same group i believe. Katsu ya sells only Katsu in its various form, Ten ya is the same thing with tenpura.
The prices are about the same as Ootoya but the food tastes better imho. Katsu ya just released a Miso chicken Katsudon which is really great and about 500 yens a bowl.
Another good and cheap chain is Hanamaru. very cheap self service Udon ya.
