TDV; Guidebook Worthy! (?)

Postby GuyJean » Sat Feb 14, 2004 10:18 pm

I'm curious; Is this flattery, marketing strategy.. or both?
This is Amy Chavez writing to tell you that your website has been chosen for inclusion in my book "Guidebook to Japan: What the other guidebooks won't tell you" (everything from how to get to a naked festival to how to avoid Japanese gangsters). Here is the book description:

"'Guidebook to Japan' offers a glimpse into Japanese society rarely captured in books or media. Chavez humors you through getting to know Japan through her newspaper commentary, cultural tips (called "Sword Tips"), and Japanese language quips (called "Sparring Japanese"), to make learning about Japan as fun as possible. A collection of over 100 columns that have run in The Japan Times paired with over 200 links to related websites on Japan (from the educational to the bizarre), this book is a vast resource of information."

There are two versions of the book: a print version and an e-book version.
The e-book version is available now and the print version will be available
in July.

1. Print version. The print version of the book is already up on
Amazon.com for US$13.97. You can see it at

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/1932133747/qid=1076764503/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-8350621-9769538?v=glance&s=books

2. The e-book version is available on my site at the One Dollar Book
Store at http://www.mooooshop.com/MooooBooks/order

I recently started the One Dollar Book Store, an online store selling my
book as an e-book for just US$1.00. I wanted to make my book as accessible to as many people as possible by keeping the price low, not out of reach for anyone. Now, people can buy "Guidebook to Japan: What the other guidebooks won't tell you" as an e-book, which is the same content as the print version, except that it's 90% off the print book price and people can download the e-book onto their computer and start reading it immediately.

Since the book offers links to over 200 websites on Japan, yours included,
an e-book makes a lot of sense since it can be hyperlinked for easy clicking straight from the e-book. Readers will be able to instantly visit your site rather than having to laboriously type in a url, lessening the chances of an actual visit. Furthermore, any changes in your site's address or pages can be easily updated in an e-book. (and remember, an e-book's shelf life is much longer than that of a print book). Just be sure to keep me updated on any changes to your site!

I opened the One Dollar Book store last week and had over 50 orders the
first day! So, I think you can see the potential here. The more books sold,
especially e-books, the more hits you will get on your site. It's a win/win
situation for both of us.

How can your site get even further exposure?

1. Put a link to the One Dollar Book Store on your site. I have an
icon I will send everyone that says, "This website featured in Guidebook to
Japan" with a link back to the One Dollar Book Store at http://www.mooooshop.com/MooooBooks/order where people can buy the book. I will send you the icon in a separate email.

2. Take part in Amazon.com's affiliate program and make a percentage on
sales of the print book from click-throughs from your site to Amazon. To do
this, you have to sign up for the Affiliate program with Amazon, which
allows you to put the Amazon icon on your site. It's quite easy to do. To
see an example, go to my One Dollar Book Store site at
http://www.mooooshop.com/MooooBooks/order and click on "Why e-books?" at the top of the page. From that page, scroll down until you see the Amazon.com icon. The icon will automatically show the book cover once the publisher uploads it in July. However, no one will buy the print book until it is available, so for now, you are better off putting up a link to the One Dollar Book Store. I will send another email in July letting you know when the book is available.

3. Put a link from your site back to my Japan Lite page at
http://www.amychavez.com which carries my weekly Japan Times column and where the One Dollar Bookstore is also featured. I will send you an icon for this as well which you are welcome to use.

4. Use the icons and links for announcements in your newsletters or emails.

Of course, how much you choose to promote your site in my book is entirely up to you. If you have any questions, please contact me at amychavez2000@yahoo.com I'm here to offer any help I can.

And thanks for all that hard work on your website! I really had fun discovering each and every one of them. I hope the inclusion in my book will help spread the word about you and your website.

Sincerely,

Amy Chavez

TokyoDV has a java feed on the front page, from F*cked Gaijin.. I cross-pollinate with quite a few sites. FG is one of them.

I try to stay below the radar; with online video, success can ultimately bring one's demise.. and has.

JAPAN LITE The local garbage police dig in the dirt By Amy Chavez Jan 12, 2004
"Amy, I see you have some magazines in there that still have the plastic on them," said a member of the garbage police, and soon they were into my stack of bound magazines, tearing off the plastic. "Oh!" said one of the 'o-baa-chans,' clearly astonished at the content.

I'm sure in TokyoDV's case this is probably legit, but the message is strikingly similar. Maybe there's a form letter template everyone is using.

I am forever shocked by the unique Japanese idea that you must get permission to post a site's url. :crazy3:

Read it again, in both cases these are foreigners and they're spamming to get us to put their link on our sites.
And look, they've even managed to get linked up on FG, even though we didn't get directly spammed by them. If that ain't viral marketing, I don't know what is...

YES! Soon "Amy Chavez" + FUCKED (gaijin) is gonna be No. 1 in Google.

And for good reason if you read this "Japan diet" humor at:
