Pets in Japan

Postby Akisa » Fri Apr 09, 2004 11:54 pm

I have a dog, is it possible for me and my Japanese girlfriend to bring the dog to Japan? She says it is very difficult, almost impossible. But, money talks, ne? How about if I offer the landlord an extra security deposit and pay more on the key money? Our dog is small. BTW I have been a long time lurker, but this is my first post. Thanks alot.

I brought my cat over. Getting critters on the plane and through quarantine is no problem.

The problem is the apartment contracts. My real estate agent couldn`t find ANYTHING for me and the cat. Finally, he just said... `Is your cat quiet?`... and got me a place. That was Nomura realty.

So... it`s not impossible, but you may have to shuttle the dog around anytime the landlord visits. My cat has to come to work with me a few times a year.

I`d suggest you look at renting a house. If you can`t get decent care for your dog in the home/old country, then you HAVE TO bring it. It`s your family. A house rental would be the best idea.

Otherwise, it may be `illegal`, but it`s not impossible. The apartment contract I signed had other stuff on it, too... I was not allowed to BRING musical instruments. (No, it didn`t say PLAY, it said BRING). So, I guess as long as I build my drum kit in my apartment, it`s OK....??

If your dog is small and quiet, I don`t imagine anyone would complain. Just bring lots of money so you can move quickly...

extra money?

Postby Akisa » Sat Apr 10, 2004 5:13 am

Do you think it would be possible to convience a landlord by offering more money as security and possibly more key money? Are the landlords concerned about the noise of the dog, or the ruining of the apartment?

Japan is pretty much a `No exceptions to any rule` place. Extra cash probably won`t help, as they ALREADY usually keep your damage deposit when you move. Even if the place is fine.

BUT, I found help. Get a Japanese person to help you, and check out apamanshop.com . You can search for places that accept pets, and I`ve been told they`re helpful.

In contrast to the first paragraph, Japan is also a place where rules are frequently broken, but if you pretend you`re playing by the rules, people will look the other way. Or hesitate to complain.

I think they`re worried about noise, damage and FLEAS... So far, every J person who`s been in my house has asked `doesn`t your cat have fleas?` It seems like they don`t know about Program or other modern flea prevention stuff.

Anyhow, again, Good Luck!

Do you really want to bring a pet to a place where a park has gravel instead of grass, and your yard is 3 feet by 4 feet?

A gaijin not complaining about key money - offering more 8O

And despite what you think, your dog is not small. Unless it's rat size it's huge by Japanese standards.

Bring it over and pay a homeless man in the local park to look after it. Then it'll have a place to run around - just make sure he's not Korean and hungry. :D

Your Japanese girlfriend is 110% right.

It will literally be torture for your dog and you. "Doggie Detention" in Japan is abusive, expensive and looooong.

Animal Quarantine... "Detention will continue for a period of 14 to 180 days depending on the existence and the content of the rabies vaccination and health certificates " (1 day costs 8,000+ yen!)
http://www.maff-aqs.go.jp/english/ryoko/ba.htm

Apartment ONLY rent to Rat dogs under 30 cm and rent at dog-friendly buildings will START at 150,000yen/m

If your dog has the necessary rabies shots and tags, (done at least 30 (?)days before the flight) 14 days quarantine is the term.

Quarantine is free. If you live close to the airport, you won`t need to pay anything, as you can feed and visit your pet every day.

If you can`t do that, you`ll pay a company. YOU provide the food, though. Don`t forget to bring it!! I didn`t see any pet food shops at the airport!

It cost just under 40,000 yen total for my cat. Less than 3,000 per day. I don`t think dogs are different..

Again, good luck!

i have a house with a big yard and everything in Ibaraki.
i am bringing my two dogs to japan, but am worried about them.

has anyone here have brought dogs to japan?
will they be nice to the dogs in quarantine?

For what it's worth, I once met this chick on an international flight from Japan to the US. She brought her pet rabbit on the plane and told me that she took it back and forth to Japan. According to her, the quarantine wasn't too stressful for the rabbit and she was allowed to visit it.

For what it's worth, which is A LOT at 8-5,000yen/day private quarantine at a registered vet may allow you to walk the dog in their fenced jailyard IF YOU ARE LUCKY. Remember this is quarantine and TIJ.
Speaking of walking the dog, hot-damn kamome, what are doing posting at this hour?

BTW: There is a new DNA-type test for rabies that requires only a 5 day quarantine in the States now, so maybe Japan will have that rule change soon.

Hey, isn't "Puppy Slush" more or less what ramchop does for a living to Ovis aires?
Maybe ramchop has some helpful advice on how to put the puppy on ice during the long and miserable hunt for doggie housing in Tokyo.

Another suggestion: trade it in for a tamagotchi.

If you're going to smuggle it in with your luggage, freeze-dry it. Then it won't take up too much of your luggage allowance.

Call Genetic Savings & Clone

Hello Kitty, or Frankenpet?
Town Hall, DC - Apr 20, 2004"Many discriminating cat lovers know exactly which cat they want, are willing to pay for it and won't settle for anything less," reads the Web site for Genetic Savings and Clone, which now is charging pet owners $50,000 to clone their cat [or dog].

Genetic Savings & Clone website:
When pet cloning is possible, how much will it cost?
...our goal is to offer dog and cat cloning services in the low five figures, and to drop the price further as we increase our efficiency. Cloning will be available on a first-come, first-served basis to GSC gene banking customers.

Sorry, didn't notice your question until now. I believe I was on a conference call from home at the time - started at 7AM and lasted almost 2 hours! Ugh. :?
