California FGs speak up and be counted!

Postby SF'd Gaijin » Sat May 01, 2004 11:28 am

How many California FGs are around?

If you are currently in Japan, where are you and where are you from in California?

If you are elsewhere, where are you and where are you from in California?

If you are living in California, where are you and why are you an FG?

I'll start. I am living in Foster City, CA (about 20 miles south of San Francisco). Grew up in San Francisco and spent many years practicing to be an FG. I religiously watch Fuji TV doramas every Saturday night and can't get enough of the Roppongi Happy Hour.

I'm Mr. Sparkle and I live in Chinatown in SF. I am Rob Pongi's friend and co-conspirator. I am a FG because I have been curious about Japan since I was a kid. My neighborhood had tons of Japanese-American kids for some reason (San Mateo, CA) and I watched Speed and Kimba every day without fail. In 3rd grade, I vividly recall Jane Tarasawa in a full-blown Kimono bustin' out that giant koto and cranked out J-trad tunes for "show 'n tell". She'd do it once a year and blow us little kids away.

the koto

In 1995, Rob Pongi invited me to hang out in Tokyo. I've been back several times and I guess you could say--the place kind of grows on you. I know a few people that post on this forum because of all these trips. Most of the visits took place between 2000 and 2003 when I was working with Rob Pongi and Guy Jean doing editing and training in Apple Final Cut Pro. I also helped Rob with some of the shooting. So that's the basic back story....

I'm about as fucked as you can get w/o actually having to live in Japan.
Take that back--Caustic is actually the most fucked you can get w/o having to live in Japan. He's in KOrea(r)

Mr. Sparkle and Rob Pongi,

You see, I had a feeling that guys as talented and funny as you must have come from the SF environs. What do you know. :P

Growing up in SF in the 50's (you see I am an old FG), my Dad used to take us to the Rio, a Japanese theater on Union Street to see all of the latest Toho B/W samurai movies. After spending years in Taiwan and learning Mandarin, then took a year of Japanese..that was long ago in the 60's.

Rob, it's funny you mentioned Walnut Creek. I lived there for one year (1982) and had to get back to Mr. Sparkle's San Mateo. How does 4th and El Camino sound right now...meet you for a good cup of coffee sometime. Have lived in San Mateo for the last 20 years and now in Foster City. Speaking of Chinatown, I used to work at the BofA Headquarters and hang out at the Jackson Cafe or Uncle's for lunch each day.

Keep up the great work and keep the videos coming.

I'm in Davis right now, just outside of Sacramento. Went to high school here and taking a break from college to find soem direction and make some money while living at home and not paying rent. :D

I went to Japan in 2001, and I'll be going back this summer. I dunno if that qualifies me as a FG, but I found the forum over a year ago and I've been lurking and occasionally posting ever since.

I am in Los Angeles. I have had a fascination with Japan since high school. Since then I have been to Japan several times for work and pleasure. Each time I go , my interest in Japan grows. Tokyo is rather addictive. I guess I'm a fucked gaijin because I'm in LA and not Tokyo!

I'm from the Bay Area as well, grew up in San Jose, than moved east over the hills for a long while, then back to the Bay, then to Southern California. Me and the wife spend summers in Japan, split between kyushu and the kinki area.

I thought all of Japan was the kinky area. Or has the New York Times misled me once again? :D

Spent 4 years in LA, spent time there eating Cuban and Mexican with bikkle, then moved to Tokyo in early 2001 and have been an FG ever since.

FG from Menlo Park, next to Stanford. Been in Japan too long but had a 4 year break in Singapore and Malaysia.

I'm in Davis right now, just outside of Sacramento.

I went to school in Sacramento. Sac State, they will let anybody in. My siblings with braing went to UCD.

I grew up in healdsburg, which is in sonoma county.. More specifically on dry creek road, if anyone knows the area

Russian River area. I used to get shipped off there for the summer. Good memories of long periods of no parental supervision.

Hope to move back to the US but with the results of the election will take a wait and see attitude.

I'm a California native, too. Went to UCSB and then went off to Tokyo/Yokohama for six years then returned to California with a few souvenirs (now ages 37, 9, and 6). We live in Pacifica, which is a sleepy surf town just south of San Francisco on highway one.

Postby kamome » Tue Nov 30, 2004 4:53 pm

Was a current FG, now an ex-FG. I'm back in LA! Did the bar scene here always suck this badly? Or am I just noticing it now after be spoiled by J-nightlife for the past 4 years?
