english bookstores, where?

Postby honki » Mon May 03, 2004 3:53 pm

i'm new to tokyo after living out in the rice fields and am seriously craving english books. i'd rather read second-hand because i don't really want to pay 1300 for a paperback. does anyone know any decent bookstores i should check out?

I hear you - am a book junkie and read about one novel a week.. would read the back of a cornflake packet if that is all that was available.

My fave second hand book haunts are:

Good Day Books at Ebisu

Caravan Books at Ikebukuro

Bondi Books at Kichijoji

All these places will buy back your books after you have finished with them.

New books can be found at Kinokuniya in Shinjuku. Or any of the large books stores have a foreign book section - usually on the upper floors.

You can always get good magazines etc at HMV and Tower but these will cost you a bundle. Don't forget your local library will have magazines you can borrow.

If you have time, pot around Jimbocho, good cheap books can be had. Even places that don't specialize in English books can have some cheapies out the front.

Going to drop a big bag of books at Blue Parrot tomorrow. Pain for me now they have moved to Ikebukuro

amazon is a fine choice. I'd also check barnesandnoble.com as well. Both ship abroad, both sell new and used books. ]http://www.skysoft.co.jp/englishN/GetTitleDetailE.asp?Userid=17858330&ISBN=043935806X[/url]

BUMP!!!!!!!!!!

Im looking for some resonable quality english books on japanese history ( history of royal family/emperors in particular) . Would prefer second hand but will be new if cheap. Id rather buy in Japan (yokohama area-tokyo if its good) because the exchange rate is better for me to buy in japan than in US dollars online.

Thanks guys

(BTW i got some sheets for 990yen)

How'd you find out about libraries? They didn't have those in Alice Springs when you were growing up, did they?

Hehehe

Just take the Yokohama Subway from your dorm to Sakuragicho Station. Yurindo Bookstore is on the 5th floor of Landmark Tower outside of Sakuragicho Station. Landmark Tower is Japan's tallest building so you cannot miss it even if you don't want to follow the crowds of people and zillion signs pointing to it. :P
