nihon e iku.......

Postby voltage » Fri Jul 30, 2004 1:55 pm

Shit, so I'm leaving for Japan tomorrow.

Maybe I'll see some of you there, you know, since there's only 30 million people living in the Tokyo area, hahaha.

I hear the heat is worse than it's been in a long time. Dammit, I'm going to miss California weather.

I have this idea that a good summer in Japan lately corresponds with a bad summer in Europe and visa versa. Evidence : this year is one of Japan's hottest on record, last year was UK's hottest on record (certainly by my living memory).

Maybe coincidence ...

bloody limeys :P We work so hard to teach the Japanese that "country" is a countable noun thus needs an article.

Oh, I daresay he'll be quite right soon as he gets out of hospital.

You are going to miss this great weather. Fog until about 11:00 am and then clearing into a beautiful warm day....this has to be some of the best weather on the SF Peninsula. Maybe you can meet up with Rob Pongi who is from Walnut Creek. I think you may enjoy the weather in the Fall or Spring, but not the Summer.

The origin of the term "limey" for a person from England is from when Captain Cook (who comprehensively mapped most of the Pacific) mandated that his crew carry limes onboard to prevent scurvy. Most other sailing nations at the time hadn't even made the connection between scurvy and vitamin C deficiency.

In 1759 he chartered St.Lawrence river in Canda and in 1760 he surveyed Newfoundland, before compiling maps by sailing around the world four times.

As a Canuck, you could argue to have less to thank Captain James Cook for, however without his help (being from the Pacific side) you certainly wouldn't be able to vacation in Hawaii, because you wouldn't have been shown where it was. Cook was referred to as "Lono" by the people of Kaua'i which means "god".

Worth thinking how much you owe them next time you call someone a limey.

Of course, on reaching many of these places, Cook often claimed them "For the King of Britain", including Canada, America, Australia Hawaii and just about anywhere else he came across.

Actually, the cure for scurvy was submitted to the Royal Navy in 1757. It was initially not believed, partly because successful Captains like Cook persisted in experimenting with a range of pet theories which managed to conceal the real answer. He rubbished the citrus theory and believed that his success in "defeating" scurvy was down to regular doses of malt. Cook was a great captain - although Pacific Islanders have bitter memories of his visits - but he can't be given credit for finding the answer when his ideas were, in truth, an obstacle to the real solution.

So some us FG native Californians can afford to move back some day.
The neighborhood I grew up in you can't touch a house for less than 1.2 million. :shakeh:
So all non-native species please plan to leave California by the end of the year and give your 3 million $$ house to a FG.

I'll be the first generation of my family since 1870 that will not be able to afford to own a home in the San Francisco Bay area where the median house costs more than $500,000. I'm pretty disappointed that I don't have the $50 K down payment and 6 figure income to qualify. It's TOTAL BS.

All you POSEUR cali immigrants should get out. It's not my fault that Cali rules, go home to your humid summers and sub zero winters - I ain't havin' none o' 'dat!

Perhaps that'll put some perspective on it.

BTW, my parent's 3 bedroom rancher in suburban silicon valley is worth $675,000. They bought it for about $20K in the late 60's.

A 3 bedroom RANCH HOUSE is over half a million?? Sounds more like Japan. Completely ridiculous.

I'm going to be studying here for one year, taking a break back the the States for spring break.

HOLY SHIT it's humid here, not too hot though. Degree wise it's no higher than inland-bay area or LA.

I moved to California when I was 6, guess I'm not native, but guess what I'm still going to end up in California. So fuck you, hahaha :flame: . Even though housing is fuckin ridiculous. My parents bought our house in the East Bay for $400k when we moved here, sold it this spring for $850k.

In any case, I look forward to the good weather of the autumn.
